I think virtual machine method would be overkill for me.  I don't need to 
use any of the exisitng windows apps - except a 3 or four that I enjoy 
using.  I primarily need to be able to migrate my exisiting data into the 
new OS.  Recently, I read that the standard Ubuntu install features a 
"migrate" option and will port existing data files into the new file system. 
That might be all I need.  Meanwhile, I still have to backup my precious 
WinME OS and the myriad of "stuff" on the current hdd.  And from my initial 
research, there isn't much of clone software for WinME. As much as I would 
prefer to use Acronis TI (so that I can continue to use it on my XP system), 
I might have to settle for TeraByte's ImageForDOS since few image/clone 
programs seem to support W98/ME anymore.

It's such a pain to ensure that a new pc can support EIDE internally - 
especially if buying a pc online. :(   I really don't want to fuss with 
adapters/converters.


Here is what I think I need to do:

Option A (if I keep the old pc, and use Ubuntu):

[1] clone/image the existing EIDE system to 2ndary drive (just as a 
precaution)
[2] setup new pc with Ubuntu, and consider using Ubuntu's "migrate".

Option B (if I decide to get a new SATA-capable pc w/XP re-installed.)

[1] assemble old EIDE hdd as an external USB drive.
[2] transer old data files manually.

I have to mull these options over.  Although I like the idea of getting new 
hardware (Option B), especially PCI-e, I don't want to lose the investment I 
recently put in the exisiting WinME pc (more ram and a new DVI AGP card)

Dilema, dilema.
