Earlier this week, I attended this year's version of Microsoft Canada's
Winter Holiday press event; the company goes across Canada-- this year,
starting in Vancouver and working east... in each city they rent a fancy
hotel suite, set it up with the software and hardware they'd like
consumers to buy over the upcoming holiday season, and invite the
technology press to 90 minute sessions meeting with various product
specialists.

This year was interesting-- not a mention of Zune.

In fact, compared to previous years (I've probably done about 10 of
these), they really toned down the gadgets and stuff-- in previous
years, they've highlighted new editions of Encarta, Streets & Trips, MS
Student, new mice, keyboards, game controllers-- all of that was missing
this year.

Instead, there were presentations of the not-yet-released MS Home
Network Server, of MSN Live on-line services, and of parental control
and security features of Vista. One presentation of a couple of upcoming
games for XBox 360 and new versions of a couple of games for Windows...
but that side of things was very low-key compared to previous years.

Microsoft has a long history of making devices and software for home
users-- and has done a very good job of it; for instance, Gates deserves
(and rarely receives) credit for kick-starting the multi-media CD-ROM
market; early in the 1990s, the Microsoft Home label was attached to a
lot of very high-quality releases... a product category that was killed
off by the Internet.

Based on this week's Holiday event, they're really down-playing this
sort of thing.
