And then there's the concept of "what would happen if I weren't 
available to bail you out?".  You sound like my wife (there's that 
cringing ;) ) - wants everyone to call her at the least bit of trouble. 
  What did we do when we were young?  Jump on the phone and make long 
distance calls to Mom and Dad to make everything right?  Not to mention, 
why do you need to know if someone just called you?  Surely 99.999% of 
the time it can wait an hour or a day.

Not to mention the myriad of inconsiderate people who have loud, long 
conversations while shopping.  A little bit of foresight (looking to see 
what's needed and planning) as well as the reality that you'll be going 
out later that day or the next kinda negates the need to find out right 
now if milk is low.  And, yes, I do the shopping.

There ARE good reasons to have a cell phone available.  Using it, 
however, is another story...
