 a standard for all versions of the software.  I do recall that years
 ago I ordered an upgrade copy of XP Pro for 98/SE/ME and was sent the
 copy for upgrading W2K.  It would not work with ME.  I have no idea if
 there are still two separate upgrade CDs, or not.

 The upgrade eligibility chart on the Microsoft website shows though,
 that W2K is not eligible to upgrade to Home, so IF there are still
 separate copies for Pro, then your copy should not work with W2K,
 despite what may flash on a screen, as your copy would be for
 98/SE/ME.

 The keys that you're referring to applied to the OEM copy of XP
 that shipped with your machine.  They can't be used with any other
 copy of XP.   You can most certainly though, install another copy
 of XP on a virgin drive using it's own set of keys.  If the installation
 copy is an upgrade version, you will need a qualifying CD.

 FWIW, the installation CD can't "know" whether or not the supplied
 qualifying CD has been previously installed or not on the presently
 virgin drive.  Possession is considered "ownership", and registration
 and activation are directed toward those issues.

 Since I've had only the one experience with failure there, I can't
 really say.  I don't even recall how my failed experience went.
