None, hence the admonition to make the removable media.  You can say then, that
the manufacturer has met the minimum requirement, whether or
not the consumer has the prudence to satisfy his part. ;-)

Nevertheless, this approach has been around for some time; it obviously
saves the OEM the cost of supplying external media.

An interesting related topic involves the use of the Windows media and
Vista.  Prior to the advent of Vista, many considered it worthwhile to
buy a copy of Windows, simply to have for purposes of reinstall, etc.

One of the more valuable features of XP IMO, is the "Repair Install", which
allow a user to restore from backup to modified hardware, and then
"repair" the installation to match the current hardware.

Vista has no such capability, to my knowledge, and moreover, the Vista EULA
stipulates that the OS may be transferred only once during its
lifetime (for conceivably such hardware failure need).

Failed laptops may be considered disposable (if not under extended warranty),
but desktops not necessarily so.  That means that the
Vista user may not be able to use his backup with modified hardware,
and thus have to start over again from scratch, i.e., buy a copy of
Vista and install it.

Extended warrantys may be needed for desktops. :-)
