All OS X-powered Macs have Apple's TextEdit program- which can be set as a
plain text editor (like Windows Notepad) or can save in RTF (like Windows
Wordpad)... it can open most *.DOC files as well.

Or you can get a real word processor, whether Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.
