Ärende: Streaming media
=======================
 AB> Hello Bob,

BK>> Does anyone here know of anyone on Fido or any web group or web
    >> site doing any work with streaming media?

AB> A little while back my wife and I were in the process of
AB> packing in preparation for a house move that never
AB> happened. I was struck by the mountain of audio CDs that
AB> we had: lots of great music (and some not- so-great ;-)
AB> that rarely gets played because we'd have to a) remember
AB> that it existed, b) find the jewel case, c) be fortunate
AB> enough that the disc itself is /in/ the right jewel case!
AB> d) put the disc in the CD player, e) play the music and
AB> then run steps b to d in reverse. I decided that when we
AB> finally move house, I'm building a streaming media server.
AB> I plan to experiment with a few open-source packages to see
AB> which one suits my application.

AB> I also picked up a TV tuner card, but have yet to try this.
AB> I should probably see how much disc space the audio stuff
AB> takes up first, but it might make sense to do something
AB> similar with video at some point in the future. What did
 AB> you have in mind?

Well, I wanted a discussion of streaming media readers with
people who know about them. I have been doing streaming media
for a long time, and am pretty knowledgeable, but not at the
 top. Call me semi-pro.

I have a TV Tuner card, it works very well. Video takes up a lot
of disk space, about 657mb per hour at VHS quality. Which is
what I normally use. Figure twice the quality is 4 times the
 space. Rule of thumb.

Also, depending on whether you just record or if you edit it,
you need a fast computer. I used to record my videos on a 533MHZ
celeron. When I moved up to a 1.6gig P4 it was mostly necessary
for editing the videos. Oh, that was recording at mpeg 1. VHS.

If you watch the computer magazines, PC Plus or PC answers, the
ones with CDs or DVDs attached, they often have video software.

For audio most anything will work. I do Real media and MP3 all
the time. Real Media company gives away a basic real media
encoder. MP3 audio software is all over the place. Notice I
don't mention Windows media. I prefer to avoid getting locked
 into Microsoft.

Now steaming I don't do from the sending end. I mostly convert
to MP3 and write to CD for listening on my CD player or put it
 on my mp3 player.

As to how much space, depends on if you do music or voice. Most
of my work is with internet news programming. For music, the
usual rule is about 5 audio CDs for one MP3 CD. IOW, about 700
 MB per 5 audio CDs.

Oh, I have a Zen Nomad MP3 player with a 30 gig hard drive, but
I rarely use it. Never in fact. I would for music, but, like I
said, I'm mostly doing news type programming.

Oh, try cyberguys.com. They have an MP3 player that is built
into a cigarette lighter plug, has an FM transmitter or
headphone output, and will read a USB memory stick or an SD or
CF memory card. Really nice idea.

Went on line to see if it's still there. It is. Two versions,
one USB only, the more expensive bout $60, muliti source.

Oh, and while online got into looking at shortwave radios. C
Crane co has some interesting stuff. New company to me.

 But that's another matter.
I highly recommend you install your tuner card, and use it. It's
good. Esp if, like me, you like recording political stuff off
the air, or educational or etc.
