Ärende: Dial-up + FTP
=====================
ml>> that would depend on the remote user/point system... i know that it
ml>> seems (major) overkill for what we, in fidonet, need... however, it
ml>> would be a method, albeit several years too late, to combat the DUN
ml>> default method of connecting to everything...

FV> Actually, I don't know that it would be overly useless. I
FV> still have several callers that use modem connections.

FV> You have a good understanding of what I was asking for. The
FV> reasoning might shed some light:

FV> Most/many people can load and run the setup for a DUN client
FV> in Windows. It not that hard. The problem is, FTN mailers
FV> can't handle the DUN calls.

right... thank mickey^Wmicrosoft for that... assholes ;)

FV> My BBS program (and I assume that other are the same or moving
FV> this way), Synchronet, is telnet only in its latest version.

ok...

FV> With a program that could offer a DUN connect using PPP, a
FV> person (user) would only need to configure their DUN. Once
FV> the connection is made, the person could then bring up a
FV> browser, telnet client or other such and make whatever
FV> connect desired/allowed by the Sysop.

right... because DUN is "Dial Up Networking"... networking being the operative
word... the destination must be able to receive the call and set up a
networking interface with at least one of the dialing user's selected
networking protocols... what we grew up with is not networking ;)

FV> As it stands now, Radius, and any other Windows dial-up FTN
FV> mailer, can allow a user to dial in and then telnet to the
FV> BBS or where ever the Sysop point them. This is done with a
FV> program named "dialuptotelnet". Still, it is not a DUN/PPP
FV> connection. What I ask for would extend and enhance this
 FV> ability.

exactly...

FV> At any rate, I think this has been hashed out before and will
FV> go to the same end. <wink>

maybe, maybe not... nowadays we have coders that understand and are willing to
do this stuff... in the past, it was a major change from what was being done
/AND/ everyone was having to switch gears and learn something else... its not
easy learning something else and not making any money to pay rent, buy food, or
just survive... this is one main reason why my own coding has dropped back to
nil ;) i think that this thread may have alex's attention and that he may be
able to understand and see more about what the desired result is... if nothing
else, alex seems to be the most prominent coder in fidonet these days...

alex: FWIW: good on ya! i only wish that your coding was more generic and thus
able to be ported to other platforms like OS/2 and linux ;)
