Ärende: Cron Settings - Argus
=============================
 DH> I am trying to set up my Cron Settings in Argus, but
 DH> I am a little confused:(
 DH> I have read the help file on how to setup a Cron, but
 DH> still just cannot understnd it all. I just setup a
 DH> cron for my uplink...as follows:

 DH>                  20 00,1-7

 DH> Now if I understand the docs/help files, this should poll my
 DH> uplink @ 8PM, seven days a week? {20 00} indicating 8PM {1-7}
 DH> indicating sun thru sat?

you've got it backwards just a bit...

it should be minute hour instead of hour minute... what you have above is
polling at midnight:20 every day if you didn't have the comma in it... you also
don't need to specify the days if this is being done every day... and you don't
seperate the fields with commas... and finally, dayofweek 1 is monday,
dayofweek 7 is sunday... same result, though...

try one of these...

  00 20 1-7

or shorter

  00 20

=== quote from the CRON FORMAT of the help file ===

Cron format is a simple but powerful way of describing periods.

Format

* * * * *   or  Minute Hour Day Month DayOfWeek
Range
Minute  0-59
Hour    0-23
Day 1-31
Month   1-12
DayOfWeek   1-7 (1 = Monday, 2 = Tuesday, ..., 7 = Sunday)

You can also use a list of values, separated by commas e.g. "1,3,7", or using
dash character to specify a range "1-5". You can also specify an asterisk
character - it defines a full range of values.

The item runs only if all criterias are fulfilled.

Examples:

* * * * *   Every minute.

59 23 31 12 5
One minute before year's end, and only if the last day is a Friday.

45 17 7 6 *
Every year at 17:45 on June 7th.

0,15,30,45 0,6,12,18 1,15,31 * *
On every full quarter of an hour at midnight, 6 in the morning, noon, 6 in the
evening on the 1st, 15th and 31st of every month on weekdays only.

0 12 * * 1-5
At noon on every day, if it is a weekday.

* * * 1,3,5,7,9,11 *
Every minute in January, March, May, July, September and November.

1,2,3,5,20-25,30-35,59 23 31 12 *
At the last day of the year at 23:01, 23:02, 23:03, 23:05, 23:20, 23:21, 23:22,
23:23, 23:24, 23:25, 23:30, 23:31, 23:32, 23:33, 23:34, 23:35, 23:59.

0 9 1-7 * 1
On every first Monday of a month, at 9 o'clock in the morning.

0 0 1 * *
At midnight on every month.

* 0-11 * * *
Every minute till midnight.

* * * 1,2,3 *
Every minute in January, February, March only!

0 0 * * *
Execute every day at midnight.

0 0 * * 3
Every Wednesday at midnight!

Removing rightmost asterisks can shorten Cron string:

0,15,30,45 0,6,12,18 1,15,31 * *    0,15,30,45 0,6,12,18 1,15,31

0 12 * * 1-5    0 12 * * 1-5

* * * 1,3,5,7,9,11 *    * * * 1,3,5,7,9,11

0 9 1-7 * 1     0 9 1-7 * 1

Cron step values can be used in conjunction with ranges. Following a range with
"/<number>" specifies skips of the number's value through the range. For
example, "0-23/2" can be used in the hours field to specify command execution
every other hour (the alternative of previous standard is
"0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22"). Steps are also permitted after an asterisk,
so if you want to say "every two hours", just use "*/2".

=== end quote from the CRON FORMAT of the help file ===

one thing i note about this bottom example of using something like

  00 */2

for denoting every other hour is that it only does even hours... it would be
nice to see a shorthand format like that denoting the same but for odd hours...
or even just a way of getting it to start on a specific hour and then go on the
"skip" number... it doesn't say it clearly but in writting this, i'm thinking
that

  45  1-23/3

might be a shorthand for one of my polls which is currently written as...

  45 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22
