General news

    Great Kills Park may still have a hazard from radioactive debris 
found there in spring 2007. I have no definite word about the status 
of the park now. Check with the contacts, as noted in the August 11th 
entry, about the starviewing session. 
    In the 'index of events, a contact, rather than a date, can mean 
that the host has NO event, being in recess. It could also mean the 
the sponsor DOES have events, but they are outside NYC Events. To 
learn about them, avail of the contact in the entry. 
    Do mind that NYC events is assembled from news I gather from you. 
Most of them come from your websites. I understand that maintaining 
addiurnate websites can be a major chore. However, failure to do so 
inflicts on you lost attention, depressed attendance, confused and 
misled visitors, faded support. 
    Please, review your website regularly. Keep it timely, with 
advance notice of upcoming activities. Now that the summer season is 
running out in September for most astronomy clubs, are you lining up 
your fall events NOW? Will you have them on your website? 
    Include both the date and weekday for your events. While we be 
astronomers, it is amazingly tricky to figure out the weekday for a 
date in a future month.
    Test your webpage links. If you offer details thru a link, is it 
still live? A dead link means loss of information you wanted your 
visitor to know. 
 
Event news

    NYSkies continues its summer lecture series on August 1nd with Dr 
Lyman Page, Princeton University. He discusses 'Observing the birth of 
the universe', explaining the results of the WMAP mission. The lecture 
on July 19th, By Dr Orsola deMarco, Hayden Planetarium, was well 
attended and enjoyed an extended !&A and informal dialog. 
    In August Urban Park Rangers and National Park Service run a joint 
tour of two forts, Castle Clinton and Fort Williams. Built in the 
early 19th century, they defended the strait between them from enemy 
invasion. They, happily, never fired a shot in wartime. In fact, their 
presence deterred England from attacking New York in the War of 1812. 
It sacked Washington in stead, 
    Urban Park Rangers, on Saturday the 11th, starts the tour at the 
Battery for Castle Clinton. You are then handed off to National Park 
Service for the ferry to Fort Williams. Because this is a many-hour 
tour with lots of walking, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes 
and pack a lunch. 
    Cornelia Street Cafe' in August has its science musical on 
Thursday the 30th, at the END of the month. Usually, it's on the first 
Sunday.
    August brings us four transit tours, of various kinds. I include 
these ersatz tours for their enrichment value for the New York 
astronomer. The Brighton line tour on August 5th is a  technical 
railroad trip. The others are more cultural and, well, fun. See 
entries for Sun 5 Aug, Sun 12 Aug, Wed 15 Aug, Sat 18 Aug. All require 
advance registration, with no at-the-gate admission. 
    The Summer Star Party and Stellafane complement each other. They
