Hmmm... in a case of enlightened self interest, I think we should reduce 
the population.  I could just kill myself, or even my family, but in the 
misquoted words of Patton "I should let the other guy die for my future" 
so the terrorist have it right!  Go kill a bunch of folks for our future!

Oh, you weren't thinking that extreme?  Ok, just tell everyone "We are 
going back to that golden period of 18xx (or 17xx, or 16xx) and everyone 
will have to not have fresh food in the winter, we will need a lot more 
horses, and those poor folks in the city will just have to starve, and 
freeze because we don't want to give them food or water or heat. They 
don't have fireplaces, afterall...

The truth is, we have the civilization that we do because we use energy. 
  People produce waste, no matter how careful they are in using their 
resources.  We deal with it, simple as that.  As more of the world comes 
up to our standard of living, we will need more energy, not less, and 
burning petrochemicals may not be the best way to provide that energy, 
but it is the easiest and cheapest method that we have.  Especially 
since so many politicians and envirowhacko groups seem to be so scared 
of nuclear power...
