Yeah, I know, it's a shame. You probably would need to redo the comped
and space shots for HD completely anyway though. For just changing the
aspect ratio and getting the extra scanlines lost in the original
interlaced showing just using the original scene files with different
render setting might've worked. But if you want something for HD that
is sort of in line with what TLT has done, you'd pretty much need to
redo all those shots anyway. That's actually the biggest reason I
would love to see a redone version: I really like this show in 16:9
but would love to see it without the cropped 480i shots that are used
for the space and comped. Especially the comped shots, with the space
shot the composition still usually kind of lends itself to cropping,
even if it results in some blurriness.


I=B4ve actually been thinking about what I would like to see if they
should do a super duper re-release for one of the new disc formats.
And I realized there are a bunch of things I would love to see and
that I think are feasible, that don't really have anything to do with
making new CG.

-A disc with the original 4:3 480i version of the show packed in with
a new release. I think I did the math on this once, and saw that a
full season in this format should about fit on one Bluray Disc. The
original CG work was groundbreaking and iconic, and I would love a
release that preserves that in the best possible way, i.e. uncropped.
Take the old telecine, take the old soundmix, and slap it on a disc as
an extra.

-A remixed surround track. I know the current DVD releases have a
dedicated 5.1 mix, but far as I know it just took the original Dolby
Pro-Logic matrixed stereo track, and did the usual splitting out the
matrix rear channel and throw it on the 2 backspeakers, and take the
voice track and throw it on the center speaker. I don't know it the
sound tracks have been stored in a format that would allow for this,
but I'd love a new mix that would add a bit more directionality to the
surround mix.

-A cleaned up print. I think I've argued in the past that the
different telecines done for the television broadcast and the wide dvd
version already made quite a bit of extra colour and detail show up,
even where they overlapped and were doing things in the same
resolution. Obviously an HD telecine would have even more detail show
up, but if you would want the end product to look as best as it can,
you'd have to do some serious work on the state of the print. There is
some heavy scratching and grainyness and lighting issues in especially
the first two seasons. I know most of the more thorough methods for
addressing this aren't cheap, and are usually only done for movies,
but I would really like to see if some of that could be addressed with
a combination of physical cleanup techniques, better telecine
technology, and digital corrections methods.
