They didn't respond by calling you dad an idiot, sight unseen, because 
he didn't want to read all the documentation and convert to the Linux 
Way, just so he could use a spreadsheet and write a few emails?

Well, I never.

I almost gave up on linux, again, for my little firewall (considering I 
could probably drop in a copy of Windows Server 2003 and have my 
firewall up and running in no time, now that I've utterly given up on 
configuring any variant of Debian for headless operation...) precisely 
because I was once again presented with a base system, and no less than 
15,000 packages to choose from.

I own (and I'm using right now) a 2005 model iBook G4. From a human 
factors perspective, the hardware on the machine is simply excellent and 
elegant. the latch for the lid stays out of the way, unless it's about 
to be closed. I can actually touch-type on the keyboard, which was 
impossible on my old Dell. I've almost stopped using the second button 
on my mouse altogether.

And if you set iLife aside, it cost no more when I bought it than a 
Dell. To get the same things on a Dell as come with iLife, I'd have had 
to spend the difference in price; it's a wash these days.
