Just to add to what John said re:  The Books.

The numbered Dell novels are out of print.  The two best, which are
also the only ones that had any input from JMS and are therefore
considered at least mostly "canon", were republished by Del Rey:  "The
Shadow Within" (by Jeanne Cavelos, who also wrote the Technomage
Trilogy, which features some character from "Shadow") and "To Dream in
the City of Sorrows" (by Kathryn M. Drenan, who wrote the first season
episode "By Any Means Necessary" and who also happens to be married to
JMS.)

"Shadow" details the voyage of the Icarus to Z'ha'dum and also tells
the parallel story of John Sheridan's first mission as commander of the
Agamenon - a secret operation involving a certain space station.  It
was the first of the books to cover events dealt with in the series and
the first where the writer had to chance to e-mail questions to JMS and
watch a substantial number of episodes.  (Some of the earlier books
were written before the show was on air, IIRC.)

"To Dream" fills in much of the gap between Sinclair's departure at the
end of season 1 and his return in "War Without End".  It also at least
partially answers the question, "What happened to Catherine Sakai?" and
tells how Marcus Cole came to be a Ranger.   Drenan naturally had much
greater access to JMS to get *her* questions answered.  <g>

JMS has said that "Shadow" is about 70% canon, accurate in broad
outline if not in every detail, and that "To Dream" is about 90% or
95%.  (He originally said 100% but during the production of the series
he apparently decided he did not want to be bound to some of the
specifics of the novel.)

The three Del Rey trilogies are also considered mostly canon ("true"
overall, some details may not be what JMS has in mind but they'll stand
until and unless he does something to contradict them on-screen.)  All
three were written from outlines by JMS himself, unlike the earlier
books.
