Dear JMS,
Just wanted to say thank you for your informative SDCC panels this
year.
As a budding writer, I especially enjoy your annual JMS on Writing
panels. This year I picked up a few things that I never thought of
before, such as keeping a seperate notebook for story note and ideas. I
often find myself writing notes on the same page of a story and it
becomes cluttered and confusing. Keping the ideas that come quickly on
a seperate piece of paper from the story proper will help a lot.
Before, as ideas came in I would write them farther down the page and
that quickly short-circuited the story flow.
Thank you for that.
Also appreciated the answer you gave on the subject of talent. I often
question myself as to when people will figure out that I'm a fraud and
am very insecure about my quality. I'm glad that you said that that is
common among writers. I never feel my stuff is perfect, sometimes I
fear that it isn't even adequate.

I also appreciated your answer to the writing teacher that wanted your
advice on how to get her students to write. When i was young I had
teachers that discouraged me from writing and told me I had no talent.
But I had one teacher that really liked my stuff. She was very
encouraging to me. Kids cannot explore their talent or even find it for
that matter if they are not confident. That teacher gave me confidence.
made me want to write. I'll never forget her.
I have taken many writing classes over the years and they mostly
consist of extolling the horrors of "the Business" and seem set up as
busy work for authors that teach the class during slow periods betweeen
their books or screenplays from being published. They are usually do
not teach the students anything and do little for their confidence.
Confidence is amajor step for a writer.
Right now I'm taking a screenplay class at UCLA Extension and the two
people teaching are wonderful. My confidence in growing. Best class
ever. Their notes are very encouraging and helpful. I don't feel like
I'm competing with the other students inthe class (15 students, but we
don't critique or read each other's stories, we just give a copy to the
teachers and they e-mail each student notes) so I feel free to "let
myself go creatively" in my writing. When you gave that answer to that
teacher at SDCC about letting the students be free with whatever they
write, I thought of my own current situation. I feel better than ever
about myself now.
