sorry to burst your bubble here, but of those of us who watch that, 
none* of us over the age of 7 "think it's real."  you don't like 
wrestling, fine, good, that's your personal preference and taste, but 
i'm really sick of all of the people who insist that the fans of the 
show "think it's real."  i've known it's scripted since my earliest 
memories of it, i don't know anyone who hasn't known that.  the industry 
itself has referred to itself as various forms of scripted for at least 
16 years now, wwe doesn't call itself "wrestling" it calls itself 
"sports entertainment" and it's "wrestlers" are "sports entertainers." 

"semi-sentient audience that ... thinks it is a real sport" is so 
condescending and ignorant of a thing to say, how about i turn that 
phrase around?  

It is obvious that the suits in charge wanted Crusade aimed at the 
mom's-basement-dwelling audience that watches skiffy, has never seen a 
real girl and thinks alien girls in skimpy clothing are real hot.  

gee, works that way too, eh? you know what, maybe TNT WAS aiming for 
that(the wrestling one you mentioned) audience, and because that 
audience is under the age of 7, they had no audience to find, it 
certainly would explain why their wrestling show went out of business, i 
also would expect them to have such a poor view of their audience, they 
inherited wrestling from ted, who actually respected his wrestling 
audience.

people doing outlandish things impossible(or highly improbable) in 
reality.

dedicated fanbase that follows the show for life or until their 
teens(it's typical of both audiences to claim they "grew out of that 
phase in high school").

Rarely gets NEW fans in their 20's(returning old fans don't count).

Regularly has gatherings where the fans dress up and act like its 
characters.

Has a small core group of fans that knows it's not real, but wishes it 
was.

conspiracy IS real)

Is aired on the Sci-Fi Channel.
Wrestling-yep(hey, i'm not happy about it either, ECW does not belong on 
SFC)    
sci-Fi-sometimes(well, when the (B)SG's and Who are on at least). 

Has had documentaries detailing the fan's dedication to the show
Wrestling-nope   Sci-Fi-yep(trekkies, for most obvious example)

has had movies mocking/spoofing the fans dedication to the show.
wrestling-yep(ready to rumble)   Sci-Fi-yep(galaxy quest)

targets a niche audience that is seen as "weird" by the mainstream.

except for that one person or show who somehow becomes "cool" but all 
references to it's roots as sci-fi or wrestling are erased from public 
discussion by it's fans, and only brought up by it's detractors.
wrestling-yep(the rock, stacy keibler, dozens of catch phrases) 
sci-fi-yep(just about any big budget blockbuster) 

oh, and almost all of the above can be said about Fantasy too, and comic 
books, and video games, and also real sports like football, baseball, 
soccer, hockey, etc, if you consider the sporting events themselves akin 
to the conventions, and if you consider buying your favorite player's 
jersey akin to wearing klingon facial appliances. 

*there is a statistically insignificant portion of the audience from 
every tv show that is mentally unbalanced and does latch onto things 
with entirely too much fervor and thinks whatever they see is real, this 
audience is, as mentioned, incredibly small, but it does make my "none" 
factually incorrect, hence the asterisk next to "none," however it also 
applies to every other tv show out there.
