The Leadership of Our Guide

"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all
Truth" (John 16:13).

Truth is like a vast cavern into which we desire to enter, but we are not able
to traverse it alone. At the entrance it is clear and bright; but if we would
go further and explore its innermost recesses, we must have a guide, or we
shall lose ourselves. The Holy Spirit, who knows all truth perfectly, is the
appointed guide of all true believers, and He conducts them as they are able to
bear it, from one inner chamber to another, so that they behold the deep things
of God, and His secret is made plain to them.

What a promise is this for the humbly inquiring mind! We desire to know the
truth and to enter into it. We are conscious of our own aptness to err, and we
feel the urgent need of a guide. We rejoice that the Holy Spirit is come and
abides among us. He condescends to act as a guide to us, and we gladly accept
His leadership. "All truth" we wish to learn, that we may not be one-sided and
out of balance. We would not be willingly ignorant of any part of revelation
lest thereby we should miss blessing or incur sin. The Spirit of God has come
that He may guide us into all truth: let us with obedient hearts hearken to His
words and follow His lead.

A CHRISTIAN

Ephesians 4:17-32

“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk
as the rest of the gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind.ö v. 17

In our world today there seems to be a variety of definitions about what a
Christian is. Some people think that to be born in North America makes them a
Christian. Others think that baptism or the church makes them a Christian. Some
people tell us that all religions are the same – they just have a different
name for God. But the Bible teaches us that God is personal and has attributes,
some He communicates to us, some are exclusively His own. The God of the Bible
reveals Himself to us in His Son – Jesus Christ.

In these verses in Ephesians 4, we notice three things which give a clear
definition of a Christian. The first is that a Christian is a CHANGED person.
There has been a change of ownership and direction (vs. 17-19), no longer taken
up with the flesh, no longer living for self, but taking a new direction,
following Christ who laid down His life as a ransom for others. The change
should be evident to all – no longer self-serving but serving Christ and
others. The appetite has changed, now desiring spiritual food and spiritual
life.

Then we see that a Christian is not only changed but CLEANSED in verses 20-22.
There have been things which were “put off.ö The old man, the unchanged person,
grew corrupt because of lies and deceit. All that is put off so that a new
person can emerge and grow in righteousness. When Jesus comes to reside in the
human heart a cleansing takes place, sin is washed away – it no longer has
control. We are delivered from its power – but not from its presence.

We also see that a Christian is to be CONSECRATED – that is set apart for
Christ. We are to “put onö Christ and be renewed in the spirit of our minds (vs
23-32). Beginning at verse 25 we see a picture of what this looks like. Living
a holy life begins at the Cross where we find victory over the world, the flesh
and the devil. It means that we do not grieve the Holy Spirit by living for our
own selfish agenda. But we live each day for Christ in the victory and fullness
of the Holy Spirit.
