Hey mark!

Yes but I still don't have the ones that are required by the gui. Lean and
mean.

ml> one has never =had= to boot to a gui on a *nix system... that's what

You could put it in there but it still won't work without the needed
dependencies.

ml> ok, so you choose to boot to inittab:3 instead of inittab:5...
ml> [shrug] still no big deal...

Won't work.

ml> yeah, for oldschool graphics, i don't doubt it ;)

Fast, clean, lean and mean. Works great. You know of a better way?

MK>> if I keep it to 8M. Loads a tad slow but I can't seem to get it

ml> sounds like he's another lemming that can't see by the light of the

Heh, heh. Actually I can do it but at the expense of the mean part of the
equation. Also given that it leaves some extra room for something that would
make it easier to use doesn't hurt. I doubt MS could or would wish to
replicate it.

ml> hehehehe... that's funny as i used to have vax/vms comsole running as
ml> my main interface to OS/2 way back when ;)

I haven't seen vax/vms since the mainframe got replaced by sparc's way back
when. I heard a rumour it got relegated to doing backups for some engineers
although it seems to me that it would be expensive to run just for that. Mind
you not using it for anything would also be a waste of already spent funds so I
guess it might all have balanced out.

ml> at least it was something
ml> very close to that, AIR... may have been something even a bit
 ml> newer...

Hard to say. Where was this if you don't mind answering? Like I say above it
could have been abandoned for it's original usage and just to keep costs
balanced it may have found new life for whatever reason. It happens ... or at
least used to.

ml> in any case, the idea is that it wasn't a GUI but more
ml> something that one might be accustomed to O:)

For me it is all about lean and mean. It can be a challenge and I seem to
enjoy that for some strange reason. My systems can do things others can't even
dream about using things nobody in their right mind would do, nevermind dream
about. Probably explains why the node got reincarnated so many times. I am
not exactly sure how long this particular point has been in use but it has been
steady in comparison.

MK>> as zip compression. The buck stops there. :-)

ml> that's about the best PNP that i've ever heard of O:)

Actually it is kind of neat in an odd way. It certainly wasn't my original
plan for those. The real odd thing is that now that it is doing that it turns
out to have been a great way to handle it. If that machine goes down that
could easily be put on any machine and in seconds would be picking up where it
left off. No FREQing at the moment but I think it wouldn't take much and it
definetly has the room for quite a few archives. Should work great for that
methinks.

ml> why too bad? it could easily be "disabled" by adjusting those two
ml> lines in the config.sys... fer sure!

But you still have the bloat. Not the same situation.

ml> yeah... pointy sticks and luddite... nothing i can do about that
ml> except to explain how things really are O:)

Who cares? I am having fun even with the criticism. Also I think I have the
best shot at survival if indeed I am not already the last one standing. :-)

Life is good,
Maurice
