well, of course ;) there is a sensor somewhere because the machine will switch
the fan thru the three speeds it operates in, OFF, LOW, and HIGH <<GG>>

in the case of fans and monitoring their RPMs, they must be three wire fans and
be connected to a sensor that can be read by software... i use MBM (MotherBoard
Monitor) and have had no problems on supported boards, limited success on
unsupported boards and no success on the laptop in question...

i have even put three wire fans in power supplies and extended the leads so
that they reach one of the (generally) three fan connectors on the
motherboard... in at least one case, i used the AGP fan sensor for the power
supply fan readings since i've never had an AGP video card that had a fan...
the only "problem" i've really had has been lack of enough fan sensors...
generally there's only three or so on most motherboards and i've not really
found out how to tap into the SMB buss to add more sensors that the sensor
monitor chips allow for... i really only run into this on some of my larger
cases that allow for additional case fans in addition to the one in the power
supply... at least one case i have in operation right now has four case fans in
addition to the power supply fan and the CPU fan... the motherboard in question
is shy of connectors by 4 or 5 so i can't monitor all the fans... no big deal,
though, since the CPU temp can also alert me to problems ;)
