Ärende: Saving Marks
====================
01-16-05 09:11, Jean Parrot told James Bradley about Saving Marks

 Well, how do, Jean?

JP> Hello, James, I hope that you are having a nice day !

Ah... Don't get me started. <-;
JB> After missing most of the thread, could you restate the problem? I'm
JB> stuck with the QWK door also, and am baffled on how to set Last Read
JB> markers "-n#Days" at this time.

JP> Maybe we are cross-firing here. In my mind, your problem is at
JP> the server, ( BBS ), when my problem is in my system and my use of
 JP> BW.

My problem, is I need to start proof-reading my gibberish, and stop posting
after sleepless nights.

I just wanted to parlay, that for me to set back my last read pointers to catch
the thread from the beginning, would mean picking up a Maximus manual to do so.
If I recall, the BW door was snap in setting pointers back. QWK... I don't know
if it's even possible.

But my quest was *only* to hear you restate *your* problem, to give us a fresh
look at it.
JP> have BW remember what messages were read and/or replied. It really
JP> has me baffled as I tried all option changes and still BW will not
JP> cooperate. But that is inside BW. I say that your problem is at

I would look into your working directory. If a ?.NDX, or ?.IDX, or whatever it
might be called, might have been marked "READ ONLY" or "HIDDEN". That would -
IMO *only* - prevent BW from writing a fresh version of the file. Again, I know
precious little about the workings to this stuff, but this is where I would
start. Even if you install BW from scratch, and you use the old directory, it
could still muck up the works.

A) Try to look for at the attributes of the \work directory files while a
packet is open, and after closing. If you need some comparison, I could dig
into the muck here for some cross refference. (Others here could help more
though.)

B) Try a different working directory.

C) Reinstall.

D) Look into the compression program. I know you wouldn't want to do anything
funky, but maybe an option is "set" that could muck up the works. <Just
thinking aloud.>

Do you see the "Rename bundle", "Save Bookmarks" "whatever, whatever" prompt
when returnming to the main menu?

JP> wherever you get your mail as I sometimes loose a .qwk and I get
JP> back to the BBS here and reset my "Last read" message to again D/L a
JP> new .qwk and have BW work on it.

I told you NOT to get me started! <G> We have two BBS's here with phone lines
attached to them. The one I was using, had a modem blow up on him, and the
replacement modem, or the serial cable doesn't seem to be HW handshaking. When
the mail packages start to CRC error in a massive way, and the "Garbage Count
Exceeded" occurs enough times, Z-Modem drops the attempt. Once that occurs, or
if I cancel the download, the ASCII from the remaining file transfer inevitably
send the QWK door a "Y" character. Boom... No file, and a last read pointer are
set as if I prompted the door to do so, and there is no mail to read.

JP> Really ? I am from Montreal but lost in Florida.

Lost in all the thonged bikinis are you? Cry me a river! Err... I mean "Cry me
an ocean." 0-8=

I had an aunt in West Palm. Come to think about it, a cousins' kid there right
now! (What would that be - a niece once removed?)

At least you're not lost in Tuktiuctuk! THEN you'd have a problem. <chuckle>
