you know who wrote the lyrics to that song?

There may come a day when the likes of Frank Fontaine
and Tony Bennett make your heart go pitty-pat. I'm not
saying that this is necessarily a good thing, just that
it may happen.

Pastel candied fruit peel
cat: candy
yield: 1 batch

3 lg perfect grapefruit; or 6 oranges
;water to cover
6 oz Jell-O, any fruit flavor
2 c;water
2 c sugar
1 lg cinnamon stick
1/2 ts whole cloves

Halve fruit and squeeze juice.

Cover squeezed fruit halves with water in a saucepan. Bring
to a boil and boil 15 min. Drain. Remove and discard pulp
and membrane and most of the white pith. Cut peel into strips
about 1/4" wide. Return to saucepan, cover again with water,
and boil for another 15 min or until tender. Drain.

Mix Jell-O, 2 c water, and 1 c sugar in a heavy skillet. Add
peel and spices. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium and
cook, stirring occasionally, until peels are translucent and
syrup is almost absorbed, about 50 min. Remove from heat.

Lift peels a few at a time with a fork and toss into remaining
1 c sugar. Shake off excess sugar and arrange in a single layer
on wax-paper-lined trays. Dry 12 hr. Store in a tightly covered
container. Makes 1 lb.
