Ärende: not chili 843
=====================
GJ> Fine, except when everyone else switches off their 100 Volt lights and
GJ> goes to bed, leaving your light as the only one on, getting 110 Volts.
 ML> What's a 10% fluctuation in voltage to a good sturdy filament?
GJ> About 50% reduction in life.

So why don't they offer 90V service and have the light bulbs
last 100% longer?

=

GJ> I normally use either canola (rape) oil or EV olive. I have not
GJ> noticed much aroma from the former, and I don't mind the latter.

Canola is a tolerable oil for cooking, as is soybean or NVOO.
EVOO has a low heat tolerance, which is not great for fast
cooking of, say, vegetables; plus its flavor goes well with
European ingredients but not so well with Asian ones.

ML> indicated "go for it." Next time I'll cut to the chase and
ML> have a couple pieces of broccoli but fill the rest of the plate
ML> with pork belly, something I seldom get under normal circumstances.
GJ> The pork belly was interspersed with roast potato wedges, but it was
GJ> still possible to get plenty.

And the potato wedges (substituting for the more traditional
white radish) did in fact not taste too bad (I got some
thinking they might be white radish).

=

 ML> Well, he's alive ...
GJ> Yes, but is that thanks to his genetic disinclination to poke metal
GJ> bits into the live power sockets, or did his mother paddle his little
GJ> backside every time he tried?

Are you saying he wasn't bright enough to thwart the
vigilance of his mother? That puts the Darwinian argument
into a completely different light.

=

ML> We saw this phenomenon - it appeared that house lots were
ML> being used to accommodate two, eh, town houses. I imagine
ML> that there is some sort of prohibition or maybe even taboo
ML> against large blocks of luxury flats such as are being built
ML> in the big cities in the US?
GJ> No, in fact Adelaide has never had a large resident population.

The question is why not. Being able to walk to one's place of
business strikes me as being an agreeable thing.

 GJ> 12 Beef porterhouse; 225g ea
ML> The advantage of a porterhouse over other cuts is
ML> achieved with a cut of at least 1.5" (about 4 cm
 ML> and nearly a kilo).
GJ> Many years ago I could eat a lump of meat that big, but having lived a
GJ> more or less Asian life style for over 30 years, I would find it
GJ> almost impossible to swallow and digest that quantity of meat. My
GJ> normal limit would be about 200 g. I am not unusual in this style of

Yesterday I had a nice 400g sirloin that would have been a nicer 425g
one had they not trimmed almost all the fat off. Luckily, they kept
most of the gristle on the steak (it would have been a fairly nice
380g steak otherwise). I got one delicious little knob of beef fat
on one end of the meat; saved that for the last wonderful bite.

Today, though, I'll probably have catfish as my main protein. So
that averages 200g per day.

GJ> eating, and as far as I can see, Australia is steadily moving towards
GJ> a more Mediterranean-Asian synthesis, in spite of the worst efforts of
 GJ> McD and their ilk.

So your people'll die of skin cancer instead of whatever you've been
dying of before.

 ML> Title: Beef Siciliana
GJ> That treatment would suit kangaroo steak very well, with the advantage
GJ> that it is lower in fat.

And what's the good of that?
