GJ> Those too. I went for the cheaper, "workers'" eateries, and recall
GJ> getting a particularly good lamb biryani at one of those. It was
ML> On the side streets (lower rents, no doubt) there were a few
ML> somewhat interesting looking places. On the main drag, I didn't
ML> see those cheaper eating houses, though the really upscale ones

It was on a corner, with the longest side open, facing the side road.

ML> (where you got a glass with your beer or soda) were on Race
ML> Course Road or the cross streets going west from Serangoon.

Best sub-continent food value was in the basement of the Tekka Centre,
cnr Serangoon and Bukit Timah ("tin hill"), getting Pakistani food
from one stall, and the bottle of Tiger beer from the Indian one next
to it. Best Chinese was in the basement of the Sim Lim building on
Rochor Canal Rd.

ML> I just did some random (that is truly random) checking, and
ML> I discovered that for cities served by Southwest, if one wished
ML> to fly United, with a month notice, the average price differential
ML> was about 20 percent. If one picked and chose alternative airlines,
ML> the average price differential was 22 percent. This differential
ML> owed to consistently higher prices on the part of Southwest. WN

Can you haggle over the counter with them to get cheaper prices?

ML> has managed to position itself in such a way that there is a
ML> certain (read stupid) clientele that goes straight to WN to book
ML> instead of comparison shopping. And it's clever in that it excludes
ML> itself from the comparison shopping engines. And it has this amazing

Cunning!

ML> marketing slogan "Ding, you are now able to move about the country,"
ML> ignoring the fact that it uses airports that are far away from the
ML> market cities (these airports are less used, which contributes to
ML> on-time statistics, plus they charge lower fees to the airline,

That is the sort of thing that cut-price, "fly-by-night" carriers here
have done, which is fine if you happen to live at Oodnawoopwoop, but
not so good for Adelaide or Melbourne residents.

ML> constricted and favors small boring cities over interesting larger
ML> ones. Now for me, flying Nob costs no more on most flights than
ML> your flying Peasant; it's one of the perks of being a loyal
ML> customer who is willing to pay 20 percent more on occasion as well
ML> as to take a 20 percent bonus, both events occurring with similar
ML> frequency, though my paying less happens more than my paying more.

That is the critical bottom line - spend to save!

ML> Note to Carol: want to go to Albuquerque in March or April?
ML> $210 on Northwest, $219 on United, $299 on WN. As of 8:15a today.

Flight costs here vary a lot dependent on the time of day, and by
advance booking a flight out of Adelaide at 0605, or from Darwin at
0105 saves something like 40% as compared with peak travel periods.
Do you have that sort of time variation?

GJ> I have just heard a sad story of a German who wished to visit his
 GJ> girlfriend in Australia
ML> It becomes clearer that this guy had some idea what he was up to.

Quite possible. Stupidity carefully planned.

 ML> I'm wondering whether he's not more like a Wrong-Way Corrigan
GJ> I recall that name, but not the circumstances of his travels.

ML> The gent, unable to get official clearance for a transatlantic
ML> flight, filed papers for a flight between New York and California,
ML> and then promptly took his plane across the Atlantic to Ireland,
ML> subsequently pleading lack of navigational expertise.

Do you know when that occurred? There was an almost identical
Australian experience, when in January, 1931, Guy Menzies wanted to do
the first solo flight across the Tasman Sea. He had been forbidden to
do it, so he filed a flight plan from Sydney to Perth, but went the
other way, finishing up landing in what appeared to be a smooth,
grassy field near Greymouth in the South Island of New Zealand.
Unfortunately it was a swamp, and the plane finished up upside down,
but without injuring Guy. On the side of a farm building near there
is a large painting of the plane - upside-down.
