So you're saying that the bulbs are consciously designed
to maximize light output, electricity usage, and filament life?
One could hardly expect that of engineers.

I like EVOO a lot, but it does have a lot of negatives attached
to it that more neutral oils do not.

I wonder whether this has been done, with allowances made for
the little plastic inserts that parents are encouraged to buy.

Turns out I had spinach salad followed by scallops. Less
satisfactory than a steak.

It's total caloric intake and burning that have anything to
do with obesity. Reducing fat in the diet of youngsters isn't
that great of an idea, because of their reliance on fat-soluble
vitamins (A, D, and E as I recall).


Frisee Salad with Lardons and Poached Eggs 
cat: salad
servings: 4

1/2 lb frisee, torn into bite-size pieces
6 oz thick-cut bacon
2 Tb distilled white vinegar
4 lg eggs
2 Tb chopped shallots
3 Tb red-wine vinegar
3/4 ts salt
1/2 ts freshly ground black pepper

Put frisee in a large bowl. Cut bacon slices crosswise into
1/4" sticks. Cook bacon in a heavy skillet over moderate
heat, stirring occasionally, until golden. Remove from heat
and set aside. Fill an 8- to 9" skillet with 1" warm water.
Half fill a wide 4-qt saucepan with water, stir in white
vinegar, and bring to a bare simmer. Break 1 egg into a cup
and slide egg into simmering liquid. Repeat with remaining
eggs, spacing them evenly in pan. Poach eggs at a bare
simmer until whites are firm but yolks are still runny -
3 to 4 min. With a slotted spoon, transfer poached eggs to
skillet of warm water.

Reheat bacon in skillet over medium heat. Add shallots and
cook, stirring for 1 min. Add red-wine vinegar and boil for
5 sec; then immediately pour hot dressing over frisee.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss well.

Divide salad among four plates. With slotted spoon,
transfer each egg to paper towels to drain briefly; then
place on salad. Season eggs with salt and pepper and
serve immediately.
