A double wall tent with a small stove and a really good sleeping bag is
quite comfortable. I've done it.

It is quite possible to sleep in a snow bank at -40 if you have really
good boots, snow pants and parka. You just burrow into the lee side of a
snow drift and let yourself get buried. I've never attempted it but Ray
has at least three times. Once when he was 14 and on a snowmobile trip,
he slept outside his tent just to see if it was possible. Then he had to
do it on an orientation field trip when he was taking Renewable
Resources at college and again during his Emergency Rescue Training at
the mine as part of his survival training. He says you get stiff and
sore from being cramped up, curling up in a ball and sleep fitfully but
after an hour or so are reasonably warm in a little snow cave just a few
inches bigger than you are.

The street people are not so well equipped. They have set up a little
hobo camp in the bush behind the city dump, using salvaged materials.
There is a constant fear they will asphyxiate themselves or set their
tents and shacks on fire from poorly contained fires.

One merchant discovered some of them were sleeping under the floor of
his store in a 24 inch high crawlspace. He discovered blankets, empty
KFC cartons, wine bottles and most frightening, as he had a sixty year
old wood frame building, dozens of candle stubs.

Another guy has taken up residence in the storage shed at the ball park.
The cops are pretending not to notice him. They'll roust him come spring
before the ball season opens though.

It was -26 today after a three day cold snap of -36. Our snow shoveller
was back at work, seemingly no worse for wear. I paid him 3 hours for 2
hours work and gave him a few smokes so that he could afford a couple
extra candles tonight.

Cut the rabbit's throat and drain the blood.  Cut off the hind feet at
the second joint.  Make an incision from the inside of one leg, across
the animal's bottom, and down the other leg. Suspend the rabbit from its
hind legs, take hold of the pelt along the incision and pull it down to
the head.  Cut off the head and pelt at the throat. Make an incision
along the stomach and remove the entrails. The heart, lung and liver are
separated from the intestines by a thin membrane.  Extract these
organs, careful not to puncture the contaminating pancreas when
detaching it from the liver.  Wash the animal, first in warm water,
then in cold. Let it sit in cold water for an hour.

     Title: Maryann Sam's Rabbit Stew

  Servings: 4

      1    rabbit; cut into pieces
      2 c  flour
      4 TB lard
      1 ts baking powder
      1 ts salt

Put the meat and bones into a pot with enough water to cover. Make a
dumpling dough of the remaining ingredients and add in spoonfuls to the
stew.   Cook over medium heat until meat is cooked and tender.  You
might add spices to taste and any vegetables you have on hand.
