Ärende: IN-FLOOR HEATING 70116
==============================
-=> Quoting Jim Weller to Glen Jamieson <=-

 GJ> in-floor (electric) heating...
JW> Such systems are all the rage now in Yuppie McMansions, but just in
JW> bathrooms with quarry tile floors, not the whole house.
GJ> I suppose there are such people, who don't mind paying to keep the
GJ> bathroom floor warm all day, so they can get the benefit for a few
 GJ> minutes of use.
JW> You can turn it on and off and even have a timer turn it on 15 minutes
JW> before you wake up in the morning. Not a huge expense after the
 JW> initial outlay.

I would expect it to take more than 15 minutes to warm up the slab.
It would be logical, of course, if you had a fixed daily routine.

JW> One of my customers added an extra heat duct to his forced air furnace
JW> that ran to the linen closet inside the bathroom. So for next to no
JW> cost he has pre-warmed towels all winter long. Also used damp towels
JW> dry quickly and completely so they don't ever get mildewy and last
JW> longer between washings; as a result his laundry costs went down!

Similarly, some people drape their towels over the hot water or
electrically bathroom convection heater.

GJ> These days, with energy conservation in the minds of most thinking
GJ> people, such behaviour would certainly be valid grounds for criticism.
GJ> I would expect the owners of such multi-kilo-Watt powered driveways to
GJ> then get into their over-sized SUVs to drive the 1/2 mile to their
GJ> favourite gym, to get their exercise.

JW> So you know the type then.

They also exist here...

GJ> I see no reason why a gas or oil-fired hot water boiler should last
GJ> longer than one which uses a heat exchanger air heater
JW> I can't explain why, but I know from experience that they do.

Perhaps your people build the air heaters too much down to a price?

GJ> Hot air systems, like cooling air conditioners, use solenoid operated
GJ> dampers in room ducts to cut off air flow to some rooms when not
 GJ> needed.

JW> We don't have solenoid operated dampers here. Perhaps we should. When

My daughter's house here has ducted hot or cold air supplied to the
lounge/kitchen area or any or all of the 3 bedrooms, with 4 switches
to control who gets what. Very simple.

JW> the sole thermostat in my house calls for heat, the furnace fires up,
JW> then the fan kicks in and hot air is blown to all parts of the house
JW> whether they need it or not. I can balance the system a bit by half
JW> closing louvers in vents in rooms near the furnace and leaving them
JW> wide open at the far ends of the duct run but that's it.

So you do have a hot air furnace? I suggest that you investigate the
cost of installing at least manually controlled dampers. (Just pay my
fare to YK and I will do that for you, free!)

      Title: Burong Babi (Tucino)
 Categories: Pork, Filipino, Loo
      Yield: 4 Servings

6 lb Skinless pork shoulder or
           Butt roast
      6 tb Salt
      4 oz White sugar
      1 ts Red food coloring
           (optional)

Debone roast and slice meat into 1/4" x 2" x 3" pieces. (Tocino is
mainly pork meat with fat in it and Burong Babi is mainly the pork
rind or skin with some meat and fat attached to it)

Combine salt and sugar mix with the sliced pork meat thoroughly. Add
  red food coloring if preferred.

Keep the seasoned meat in a plastic container covered with a plastic
sheet for at least a week at room temperature to cure. After a week
the seasoned meat should be cured and will have a bit of a sweet and
sour taste and should be kept in the refrigerator.

Cook by pan-frying or broiling in the oven or the barbecue.
