========================================================================
Mornin Ruth!
->
-> -> hn> were honoring the 6 teachers in the district that passed the
National
-> -> hn> Board Certification process. It was a very nice ceremony and they
->
-> -> So let's hope they seriously recognise her work and implement her
-> -> suggestions.
->
-> hn> She already is known quite well for her skills, this will give her a
->  hn> little more
-> hn> poundage when she expresses an opinion though.
->
-> Good! Maybe the school system will straighen itself out. I've yet to be
-> in a place where the public school system is doing as good a job as it
-> could, generally thru no fault of the teacher but from higher up. Some
-> teachers aren't worth the money paid them but it seems to be the
-> administration that doesn't do a great job in making sure the kids are
-> well educated.
->
The Administration is one problem that's for sure, but it's also the school
board and parents who raise a ruckus when something doesn't go the way
they think it should (sometimes they are right...but usually it's a personality

thing and the parents are just being a big pain in the seat of education) .
State and Federal guidlines exist but don't come with any funding to help the
schools accomplish the goals. Teachers are required to do so much more than
just teach these days. Anne had one student who came in rambling about his
step brother and step mother fighting and beating him up ...Anne had to take
what he said seriously and had to get the authorities involved...turns out the
kid was mad at his family and decided to "get even" ....and he knew just
what to say to ring the bells. Took half a day and a lot of Anne's and the
school's resources to get it straightened out.
->
-> -> hn> from either end of the extremes from a gated community in a
-> -> hn> "McMansion" or from a trailer with cars on blocks in the front yard.
-> -> hn> Several of the teachers refer to
->
-> -> What a demographic difference! Rachel had the 2nd group of kids in
GA;
-> -> the two years she taught in AZ, the kids were more like the first group.
-> -> Not all, but quite a signifigant difference.
->
-> hn> It is a stark reminder of the gap between very very rich and dirt
-> hn> poor. The kids in k, 1, and 2nd grade don't pay much attention to
-> hn> it...but by the time they get to third grade they start to notice the
-> hn> differences and it's sad to see how it works out.
->
-> Are uniforms required? Sometimes that helps equalise the kids--no brand
-> names, "bling" or other set aparts help the kids unite.
->
Not in this school district, although they are being used in the Tacoma School
district. Doesn't really make that much difference though the poor kids and
the rich kids know who each other are.

-> -> We don't have contact with any of the teachers our girls had in high
-> -> school. Deborah has thought of looking up her main JROTC instructor &
-> -> letting him know what she's doing. (G)
->
-> hn> As I said, I volunteered in the school and met and helped almost all
-> hn> the IB teachers at one point or another. And the kids were special to
-> hn> me as well! Didn't matter if you were rich or poor, if you could hack
-> hn> the program you were "in" and if you didn't you were back into the
-> hn> general school population. It took a lot of work and a huge
commitment
-> hn> to stay in the program and by the end of it most of the kids were
->  hn> great friends.
->
-> Sounds like the Challenger schools.
->
More than likely higher that them even. Most "A" list colleges would accept an
IB diploma and let the student enter college at a sophomore level. being able
to skip the freshman year classes (and it's expense) was a big motivator as
well for both kids and parents!
->
-> -> hn> As good a start into easy to prepare dishes as you can
-> -> hn> find...spaghetti is good, did they make the sauce from scratch or
was
-> ->  hn> it "Ragu"?
->
-> -> I think it was from scratch; didn't taste like Ragu.
->
-> hn> Scratch is more fun to make that's for sure!
->
-> For sure! I don't make the sauce my mom made us eat (just a generic
-> meat sauce) and have even ventured quite a ways a way from the basic
-> marinara Steve's mom uses 99% of the time.
->
They are not hard to make and you can do them quick or let them simmer for
hours and variations are only limited by your imagination (and what's in the
pantry!).

chat with you soon
