I got an E-mail from Manny asking what the heck was the "Stuff" that was
being written about?  So I retold the history of my recipe, in my E-mail
reply.   I decided to post the reply here.... minus all the cutting remarks
about the other Echoers, of course. [g]   You who have been on the Echo for
years may feel free to ignore this post.

mr-> I have a question for you: what is the Stuff that you are making for
mr-> the picnic? I don't remember you posting the recipe.

When Butch used to go away to bridge club, etc., she used to leave me a
dish to warm up. Remember I am an Eat.  Or I would plan to go out to Gus's
Kountry Kitchen. Years ago I meant to go out but changed my mind. I bumped
around the kitchen and the cellar shelves and found some stuff. I lumped it
all together and created [Ha!] a quick meal. I got so I made it quite often
when Shirley went out because it tasted so good.. 

Well, truthfully Shirley would put it on the magic burner and go. [gas
stove had one burner you could set roughly to a given temperature and the
flame would go off and on to regulate... it was great] Covered and
simmering on the magic burner it would 'age' for hours if necessary. I used
to eat it almost exactly the way it says in the recipe. 

After a few years I wrote the recipe and put it up in the Echo, mostly to
be funny..... I can't imagine any real cook making it.  Then we had it for
supper a few weeks ago, and Shirley had it for the first time. [other than
a taste]   I decided then that it would fun to insult the dignity of the
group by making it for the Picnic.  So God willin' that's what I'll do,
canned mushrooms, frozen peas, gravy mix, and all. 

Well, to stick to form, Shirley will probably make it..... after all I am
the Chef in this case. [g] 

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

Title: My Stuff (Non-Alcoholic)
Categories: Lazy
Yield: 1 Big servin'

   1/2  md Onion, sliced
 4      oz Mushrooms (sm can sliced)
           -reserve liquid
   1/4  lb Roughly of ground hamburg
   1/2     Package of dry gravy mix
   1/2  c  Mushroom liquid plus water
           -some frozen green peas
 6      oz RED Zinfandel (not white)

Dump onions, and beef into a large frying pan and cook until beef is
browned. Make the mushroom liquid up to 1/2 cup with water, and add to the
pan. Then add the mushrooms and the dry gravy powder. Cook and stir a
little until it thickens some. 

Cover and let sit on the magic burner, at about 180 F.   Just before
eating, throw in a handful of peas, for color. (I used to 'brown' the
mushrooms with the hamburg, but Shirley says it was a waste of time.)  

Go drink the wine at the computer, watch the news, etc.. When you are ready
to eat (My Stuff was ready at the end of the last paragraph) make a serving
of instant potatoes and three slices of nice brown toast.  Put the potatoes
and *two* slices of toast on a big plate. Put about 2/3 to 3/4 of the My
Stuff on top. Refill wine glass.  

When the toast is gone, and the potatoes are about 2/3 gone, get the last
slice of toast and put the rest of the My Stuff on the toast, and on  the
potatoes to warm them up.

My Stuff can sit on the magic burner (A controlled temperature burner) for
hours if you want. It just gets better. Remember to turn off the magic
burner.
