BM> The rest of us certainly appreciate your adventures, the more as we

Thank you. Some of the adventures can be interesting enough
for public consumption. Others, such as today's, are not
particularly enthralling. Oh, well, what the heck, I'll
put it at the bottom of this post anyhow.

If you screw up the water, you can always give in to

An acquired condition or naturally? I am reminded of Old Father
William from the Lewis Carroll poem, who ate his poultry, flesh,
skin, bones, and all, because he had exercised his jaws (in a
most unorthodox way) in his youth. I was reminded as well during
my meatarian week when I was getting down to the gristly bits
of my rations.

 > Outside of my field of expertise, for sure.
BM> They're handy for quick microwaveable hot lunches for work.

As I said. Microwave and work are subjects on which I know
relatively little. More than I know about macaroni and cheese,
but not by much.

Today I had to have lunch at work - I had a banana, an ounce of
last week's airplane snack mix, an ounce of Jelly Bellys (also
from that flight), and a small can of grapefruit juice (ditto).
One of the other violinists, feeling pity for me, gave me half
a tuna, avocado, and olive sandwich. Interesting.

1 whole roasted red pepper
1/2 t grainy mustard
1 t rice vinegar
1 t olive oil

Wash spinach and remove tough stems.

Steam the spinach in the water clinging to its leaves.

Rinse the pepper, and cut into julienne strips.

In a serving bowl, whisk together the mustard, vinegar and oil

Drain spinach thoroughly, and mix with red pepper and dressing.

I finished my concert and talked one of the musicians into
taking me to the airport so I could get a flight (booked 2
days ago and thus costing double what it might have, but I
wasn't told I'd be needed until recently). There was NO one
waiting at security. Probably 15 employees from ticket
checkers to screeners to supervisors. And me. I thought for
sure I was going to get the third degree, but no, they
didn't want to be bothered. As I left I heard one of the
screeners complaining that he'd been made to confiscate a
corkscrew by a higher-up who considered it a "pocket knife."
At least he was complaining.

The snack at the club was Tillamook Monterey Jack and
crackers, with a bowl of slightly stale fruit next to it;
I passed.

I was chatting with Joanne, the weekend desk girl, and some
guy who was going out on Boston-Washington-London asked if he
had cleared the upgrade waitlist. She checked and discovered
he wasn't even on the list. And further, he was on a steeply
discounted fare that prevented him ever being put on the list,
so he was bluffing. We had a chuckle at his expense while he
scurried off: he had clearly been hoping his charm and suavity
(and lying) would get a business-class boarding pass.

In my situation I carefully balance the cheapness of the fare
with the possibility of my getting a backache if I sit for 5
to 20 hours in coach and try to find the cheapest fare that
will allow me a chance to upgrade: this guy wanted to have
his cake and eat it too.

Anyway, my own upgrade Boston-Washington cleared, as I knew
it would (they had taken away an upgrade credit already, as I
knew from looking at an obscure and hidden page on the Website,
so I knew that they were just making me wait and beg); I had my
choice of the okay window seat 1A or the excellent aisle seat
2C. I chose 1A because looking out the window is important to me.

We boarded up early, because the weather report was calling for
enormous headwinds that would make our 1.5-hr flight into a
nearly 2-hr one. As it turned out, we were only 1.5-hr in the
air and so landed fairly early. During this time I managed
to scarf down a pack of snacks, a Courvoisier (extremely harsh
and nasty, VS at best), and a Canadian Club (somewhat harsh but
with interesting notes of vanilla, chocolate, and coconut instead
of the usual oak and almond). Did the crossword, took a snooze,
and in general acted as though this tube going Mach 0.80 were my
living room. Tried to call my brother to pick me up, but my
father managed to screw up the telephone to the degree that the
communications line was cut, so I spent $30 on the StupidShuttle,
to find that my father really didn't need me that badly at all.

Oh, well, I'd been hoping to relax a couple days, have dinner with
my friend Nicholas, and so on, before heading down to my concerts
in Fayetteville, but here were two days eaten up by illusory (?
or exaggerated) family concerns.
