==================
ML> The very best part of the meal was the Dos Equis
ML> dark: Barry and I each had two pints.
GJ> One of my favourite Mexican beers. Was this on tap, or from bottles?

On tap. One doesn't usually get pint bottles, though there
have been exceptions to that.

ML> standard baby octopodes: I could put one of these half in my
ML> mouth and look sort of a character in a Johnny Depp movie. I
ML> had about five of them.
GJ> And did you? (Dining out with you is always a pleasure.)

No, as an appropriate audience wasn't present.

ML> My fortune told me to be satisfied with what I possess.
ML> I guess I'm never going to be rich.
GJ> Did Carol have anything to do with loading the fortune cookies?

If she had, it might have said for me to be satisfied with
what I have, but I was going to become rich anyway.

GJ> Regarding all our flying around, and my morbid interest in disasters,
GJ> I read recently that the main purpose of taking the "brace position"
GJ> before crashing is that that best preserves teeth and jaws, improving
GJ> the chances of identifying the remains.

I gave this idea a brief thought as we rushed through the
deicing yesterday (there was still a bit of ice on my window,
but I guess they'd done the control surfaces when I wasn't
looking) and took off with vast shuddering and shimmying.

ML> The body of evidence is of long standing, and it includes
ML> bleeds of up to nine days. No weak vein walls, but in the
 GJ> From the nose?

Nine days from the nose. Six or so hours from wounds, with
periodic reopening - one advantage is that the bloodflow
seems to give me some mojo that used to let me heal pretty
easily.

ML> nose, weak capillaries. Elsewhere, none of the above.
ML> "Thin" blood doesn't mean anything, anyhow (and in fact,
ML> "blood thinner" doesn't really mean "blood thinner")
GJ> I realise that, but was using a common language term, as in, "Arrh,
GJ> spend too much time in the tropics and it thins your blood, so you
GJ> can't stand cold climates. Arrh!" I meant it to mean "non-clotting".

You're an engineer! One expects more precision from engineers.

GJ> I certainly believe you unquestioningly! That is why the anomoly of
GJ> blood which forms clots within arteries, but can't clot when exposed

Interestingly, my problem is almost totally hemorrhagic, not
thrombotic. I got some clots in my left arm, but that was from
damage caused by the IV line.

GJ> to air is so intriguing. A most absorbing engineering problem!

I maintain that physicians should get off their high horse and
approach the human body from a less mystical position and pay
more attention to principles of physics and engineering.

   And
GJ> is there a functional connection between the overly delicate capillary
GJ> walls in your nose and your exceptional sensitivity to odours?

Interesting you mention that, as I found that my sensitivity
to odors took a severe dive in the 1970s after my nasal cautery.
Never fully came back, the good effect being that I can taste
many cheeses without nausea.

GJ> Although I have not seen it actually done, the peanuts bought from
GJ> vendors in the Philippines certainly appear to be fried, as does the
GJ> dry, crunchy cloves of garlic usually included with them. When
 GJ> exposed to fresh, raw peanuts in PNG, I have shelled and fried them;
GJ> also boiled. I never got them as good as the Filipino vendors.

Well, that certainly sounds like fried - and something that
perhaps might do well with trying some time. Garlic and a
couple chiles in the oil.

ML> La phet - green tea salad
 ML> 1/3 c loose green tea leaves
GJ> Would these be dried green tea leaves, or fresh, green, green leaves?

Green leaves or reconstituted dried ones.

 ML> Strand Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar
GJ> Not a country which I would favour visiting, because of my political
 GJ> objections to the regime.

I'm not too fond of these folks and have no desire to visit.
Cambodia, China, and various Central American countries are
also on my list.

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Jim Weller <=-

GJ> although I have never actually bought any, on occasions I have been
GJ> given some already popped corn to eat, bought by others. In fact, I
GJ> have just found a half-eaten bag of such which has been sitting in the
GJ> kitchen for a couple of months, and tried some, just now. (It said on
GJ> the packet, "Eat me now!", so I did.) It was not very wonderful, but

Um, was that a fair test, do you think?

GJ> Chooky condescended to taste it - and then rejected it.

As would her carnivore compatriot here.

JW> Over 17 billion quarts of popcorn are consumed
 JW> by Americans every year!

That's 50 quarts per caput. I forget the volume ratio of popped
to raw, but that's still quite a sizable amount.

Popcorn differs from other corn in the ratio
JW> of protein to starch in the edosperm of the kernel, a larger amount
JW> of amylose (nonwaxy starch) compared to amylopectin (waxy starch),

Poori (Indian Indian fry bread)
cat: Indian, bread
Yield: 16

1 1/2 c whole wheat flour
1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1/8 t salt
4 T butter
3/4 c lukewarm water
vegetable oil for frying

Sift flours and salt together. Mix butter in with the fingers. Add
water to make a firm dough. Knead a few minutes or until dough is
smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest 30 min at room temp. Knead
again. Divide dough into 16 portions (about 1 oz) and roll each
out to a 5" circle.

Heat oil to 350 and fry one at a time until puffed and brown.

Variation: Chapatis. Use same dough as above but grill on
an ungreased griddle or skillet 1 min on a side or until brown
(these won't puff much).
