GJ> I have done just that, and found the reason for this anomaly. You had
GJ> spoken of a "100 pound" tank, so naturally I had assumed you filled
GJ> tanks by weight, and paid for the gas on that basis, as I was
GJ> accustomed to do, and as is the practice here, but on reading that web
GJ> site I saw that in USA it is the practice to fill by volume. In that

DS> Glen, I really don't know what you're trying to get at here. I heat
DS> and cook with propane and have two 300-pound tanks at my house, each
DS> of which holds 100 gallons of propane. How is the propane company
DS> supposed to WEIGH the tanks when they come fill them? Am I supposed
DS> to permanently mount these tanks on a scale? Of COURSE we fill by
 DS> volume for bulk amounts.

Aha! I can see where the lack of understanding originated. When Jim
spoke of filling the "100 pound" tank I envisaged the 50 kg bottles
which I used to use. These were not recharged on site, but taken to
the supplier and swapped for full ones. Naturally, these were filled
to a total weight as stamped on the cylinder. I prithee forgive my
ignorance of such things as domestic bulk tanks.

The only bulk customers I have seen here are service stations, and
their above-ground tanks would be filled by volume. I don't know if
the propane's temperature is measured to compensate for the gas being
above or below the standard temperature for sale. I do not recall
seeing any domestic installations of large tanks. Although gas is
used in a large proportion of the houses here, it is always piped
natural gas, of which Australia has large reserves inland. It is much
cheaper than propane or LPG, which is mainly used by taxis as fuel.
The natural gas is liquified (LNG) for export, mainly to Japan, but
for domestic use just pumped to houses as slightly pressurised gas.
Many of our buses use it, stored compressed in banks of cylinders.

DS> As Dale mentions below, small tanks, like the ones we use for
DS> gas grills, soldering, etc - up to 100-pounders - are indeed
 DS> filled by weight.

That is logical, as an alternative to a "change-over". How is the
level of propane in your fixed tanks indicated? A dial-type gauge
operated by an internal float, or a glass tube on the end of the tank,
like a boiler gauge glass? As propane has such a high coefficient of
expansion, how do you compensate for getting less weight of gas per
volume in Summer than in Winter - or do you just try to only refill
your tanks in Winter?

      Title: LIME FLAN
 Categories: Desserts, Filipino, Asia-se
      Yield: 8 servings

      1 c Sugar- castor
     10 Egg yolks
    220 ml Milk- sweetened condensed
    150 ml Milk- evaporated
      1 Limes; zest of

Preheat oven to 325^C. Place sugar in a frypan. Heat over low heat.
Watch very closely. As the sugar begins to melt, stir for a minute or
two, or till a golden colour. Stir continuously to avoid scorching.
Pour the caramelised sugar into an 8-cup ring mould or divide amongst
  8 custard cups.

Using a fork, whisk the egg yolks, condensed & evaporated milk with
1/2c plus 1tb water. Pour into a ring mould or custard cups, over the
caramelised sugar, Sprinkle the grated lime on top. Making sure the
water does not overflow into the custard, set the mould or cups on a
wire rack in a pan of hot water 2.5cm deep, & steam for an hour, or
  till the custard is set.

Remove from the oven carefully. When the baking pans are cool enough
to handle, carefully invert the flan onto a serving platter &
individual dessert plates. Serve warm or chilled.
