Prince Hubert de Polignac Cognac *** - after an
aggressive alcoholic start, it becomes rather smooth,
quite chocolaty (as in Nutella), with a nutty finish
that unfortunately doesn't persist.

James Gordon Pride of Scotland Old Highland All
Malt (distilled 1950) - light brown, with suspended
flecks, not too attractive, but this stuff is older
than I am, and it's near the end of the bottle. The
principal flavor is wood, with any maltiness or
peatiness long gone. Way past its prime, if it had one.

Talisker 10 - light and clear, quite peaty, fairly
pleasant; at 91 proof, needs water to bring out the
flavor.

Talisker 18 "Double Matured" - dark brown, clear,
very rich and woody but with a bit of bite; not
sure it's worth $70 a bottle.

McKendric Texas Bourbon - aged in oak with mesquite chips,
talking of engineered. Further, it has been said that though
the stuff is bottled in Texas, it is distilled in someplace
like Minnesota. Very slightly hot on opening, but the oak
mellows this out a bit. Mesquite adds an almost mentholly
aspect; an interesting whiskey, but not one I could drink
every day.

Remy Martin XO - harsher than I remembered; rather green on
the opening, lots of alcohol going up the nose, extremely
spicy on the sides of the tongue; on the other hand, a lot
of fruit and oak on the palate and a most interesting finish
- candied but lots of oak and almost a saltiness. I'm
guessing this is a blend built for the Asian palate that
somehow migrated across the oceans.

Courvoisier VSOP - I am lucky to have access to a
bottle of this bottled between 1950 and 1960. It
is, in fact, very similar to what I tasted in the
1960s and much more "Courvoisierlike" for want of
a better term than what I've been drinking on the
airplane. Enormous fruitcaky nose - spice, nuts,
raisins; fairly smooth on the palate but with a
distinct burn. A kind of peculiar woody vanillary
but very long finish. Pretty interesting.

Paul Masson Grande Amber brandy (California) Aged in
oak for 3 years - medium golden color, little aroma.
Surprisingly not offensive; slight raw brandy taste
but far smoother than I'd expected. Negligible finish.
Good for a potential drunkard; not so good for cooking;
bad for sipping.

Landy Cognac VS - rather raw, wood (but not oaky) and
alcohol nose reminiscent of an Armagnac; burn on the
palate followed by a mild sweetness; some green and
dried fruit comes out mid- to end of palate; very nice
very long wood (oak comes out) and dried fruit finish.
A triumph as it cost $15.95 a fifth, plus a $5 mail-in
rebate.
