Congrats on the house. A 2-car garage-size space, enclosed, that
sounds like a lot o' room.

Congrats on this too. Remember (as I have to) that sitting on
one's bum isn't that great for one's physical well-being. Get
up from time to time. Jiggle your legs to keep the circulation
going. Fidget once in a while even if it's not your nature to.
In general, don't slug it as much as you're tempted to do.
Stay healthy.

10-MINUTE FRUIT GRATIN
cat: easy, dessert
Yield: 4 servings

1 lb perfectly ripe soft fruit [such as]
 - peaches, plums, berries, figs or a combination
1 c heavy cream
3 Tb sugar
1 ts vanilla extract.

Preheat broiler; set rack as close to heat source as possible
(even 2" is not too close). [M's note: "even"??]

Wash, pit, stem and peel the fruit as necessary. Cut stone fruit
in halves or slices, as you prefer. Cut strawberries in thick
slices; leave smaller berries whole. Place the fruit (at least 2
c full) in a baking or gratin dish just large enough to hold it.

Whip cream with 2 T sugar until it is thick and just barely
holding soft peaks; stir in the vanilla extract. Pour cream over
and around the fruit. Sprinkle with remaining sugar.

Broil carefully, allowing cream to brown all over and even burn
in a couple of spots; rotate baking dish during broiling if
necessary. Remove and serve.

Topping variation: Combine 1 c sour cream with just enough milk
(about 1/4 c) so that you can whisk it smooth. Add 2 T sugar,
and proceed as above, using 1 T brown sugar for the topping.
[M's note 1998 - this variation, reported this week in the New York
Times as though it were the latest thing, is as old as the hills;
as old as I am, anyway.]
