JW> When I was on pipeline working as a surveyor I hit a stretch of miles
JW> and miles of small popular trees which slowed us down as we had to cut

I imagine those trees would have been "poplar", rather than "popular";
In fact, quite the opposite. (Forgive me, I can't help myself!)

JW> lines before we could do any work. I had four guys with chainsaws and
JW> axes helping but we were progressing too slowly. One day in
JW> frustration I drove through a stand of trees with the truck. It had an
JW> heavy extended bumper which could clip off trees up to three inches
JW> thick at 30 miles per hour and a steel skid pan so the stumps didn't
JW> damage the underside. I cleared over 18 miles in one day that way.

Excellent! Did you find out that capacity of the truck to wipe out
trees "by accident"?

JW> The truck which was on a six month rental and had to be restored
JW> before it got turned in got scratched, lost its radio antenna and had a
JW> cracked windshield. The repair bill was about $1800. Naturally an
JW> auditor bitched about the excessive wear and tear. But when I explained
JW> to my supervisor, an engineer, that I had cleared 18 miles of line in
JW> one day, saved $18,000 in direct costs and a potential $180,000 shut
JW> down if construction had to stop, everything was all right. (I like
 JW> engineers!)

Thanks (condescendingly). (g) I would have enjoyed driving the truck.

During WW2, Lae had been the venue for some rather intense fighting,
so many of the trees contained machine gun bullets. While I was
there, occasionally trees would fall on the roads and have to be cut
up and removed. A nickel-jacketted bullet makes quite a mess of a
chainsaw! Unexploded shells and bombs were frequently unearthed when
digging ditches for pipes and cables, so they would be piled into a
front-end loader bucket and taken to a quarry for the Australian army
to detonate. To my surprise no one had been killed doing that.
