Ärende: my birthday
===================
Salutations Michael!

-> HN> I like fish, don't mind the smell of fresh fish at all. And I think I
-> HN> am very lucky in many areas of my life! (grin)
->
-> Having seen your life and your wife and child, I'd tend to
-> agree. But it's no better than you deserve.
->
Oh my word, MUCH better than I deserve (grin)! Speaking of my daughter I
am in Bodega Bay Marine Labs as we speak/type! Amanda is printing off a
bunch of literature that she has to read to prepare for a course she is TA'ing
this quarter. It's 854 pm and we are at "work"! They have wifi here now so I
just tapped in and here I am!
The 25th was my birthday, so tonight Amanda decided to take me out to
dinner to celebrate since I wasn't here to celebrate with her. Our first choice

was Alices Restaurant in Sebastapol, but for some reason it was closed
today...so we cast about for ideas and decided to go to Petaluma to try a
BBQ place I had seen several times but never got to try on any previous trip.
Lombardi's BBQ and Deli is in a house like structure just off the road. a
smallish (less than 20 spaces) parking lot was almost empty and we got there
at 6 ish and closing time was 7. A good sign was the fact that there were
about 6 goodsized ( and well used) smokers right out front, and the smell was
right, they'd been fired up recently. We went in and I was fairly suprised to
see a small eating area ( I was expecting much larger) of about 6 tables, and
a big deli counter with a selection of meats and salads and such. The menu
was listed up on the wall behind the counter and two cute young teenaged
girls and one mid 20's "grillmaster" manned the counter. I asked for a small
sample of the pulled pork (a nice largish boston butt was sitting in the tray
inside the counter with about half of it shredded off) and it was quite good,
tender, a bit dry from sitting in the cooler for however long, good smoke and
a decent but mild dry rub, nice smoke ring on my little chunk. I decided to go

for a full rack of pork ribs...and hooo boy did they give me a big rack!
(Amanda did mention that it was my birthday) Amanda had a tri tip sandwich
with horseradish and it was mouthwatering tender and moist and just the
right amount of horseradish for Amanda (not quite enough for me). We
decided to "eat in" and sat down at one of the tables surrounded by bottles
of wine (grin). One of the young ladies went outside to the smoker and
hauled in my big slab of ribs and chopped it for me, the sauce was fairly mild
(well ok very mild) but had a very good balance between the sweetness and
the tang of the vinegar. All in all I'd give the place a good solid 7 out of
10,
and I'd go back and eat there again...needless to say I could not finish my
huge serving of ribs (full rack $16.00, half rack $8.99) so we packed up (my
ribs came served to me in a styrofoam carton with the sauce in little half cup
plastic cups with lids) and drove back to bodega bay and came up here to
the labs so Amanda could do a bit of stuff before we headed back to her
room in the housing area.

->  HN> I was in a freakin hospital....where would I find a beer?
->
-> Where there's a will, there's a way. When I worked in a
-> hospital, we used to draw (not generously) of a large
-> jug of absolute alcohol for our entertainment.
->
Had I been there for more than a test I might have arranged to have
something in my car to eat and drink...but alas I did not know the procedure
of the test other than that I had to fast for 10 hours before it.

->   And what
-> HN> sort of hamburger do you think I'd get in a hosptial cafeteria? (grin)
->
-> Sadly, these days, probably a Gardenburger(tm). My father
-> reports that hospital food is much better than it used to be.
->
A sure sign that his memory is fading!

-> -> Isn't that a major reason why most of us cook?
-> HN> Well I mostly cook food that Annie likes (grin)..
->
-> Domestic peace and tranquility is a good thing, is it not?
->
A very good thing indeed!
-> ==
->
-> -> Most Chianti is rough and nasty; although there was in the
-> -> 1970s-1980s a movement to improve the quality of the product,
->  -> I think there's been a bit of backsliding lately.
->  HN> What about Lambrusco?
->
-> Speaking of criminal. Lambrusco is a wine to be drunk if
-> you want to get drunk rapidly and have a big headache after.
-> Story. I used to go out with the daughter of a doctor: we
-> would drink what he called Reunited Wine with our less than
-> formal meals. One day, we had just finished a couple bottles
-> of the stuff, and Dr. Morrison clutched at his abdomen and
-> said, my appendix just burst. So off to the hospital, where
-> it turned out that in fact his appendix had just burst, but
-> as he was a tough old coot, and the diagnosis was, shall we
-> say, very prompt, he was well in a few days; never afterward
-> did we drink that Reunited wine.
->
I have already lost my appendix so that don't scare me none! (grin)
How was the trip to France? I drove from Tacoma to Bodega Bay on
Monday...did it in 12.5 hours and averaged 68.5 mph for the entire trip. I
stopped twice for the bathroom and once for gas (in Medford OR) and spent
ab out 45 minutes crawling along state highway 80 between Vacaville and
San Rafel where I turned north to Petaluma.
Tomorrow we go to Davis and Amanda does a meeting and a 45 minute TA
orientation "class" and we haul a few remaining items from her place there
(mostly her bicycle and more books) back here to the labs.
I'll post more as I get a chance (and a free wifi connection) along the way.
Thurday I head out towards Albuquerque and Anne arrives there on Saturday.
Chat with you when I get the chance!
