=====================
-> Quoted without comment, of course.
 CB> I don't think I'll comment either....
ML> i see you've forgotten some of your survival skills O%^)

MLoo> Uh, let's just say I won't bathe in bacon fat before
MLoo> visiting Carol, but I'm perfectly happy feeding it to her.
 MLoo> In moderation, of course.

hehe, i hear ya... probablt don't want to stand around in the smoke and steam
of cooking chicharoons<sp?> either... speaking of those, are they more like the
large light fluffy pig skins we see in the stores or are they more of the
smaller crunchier variety also seen in the stores??

-=> Mark Lewis said to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Did he like the durian? One of my favourite fruits, although for
GJ> some reason not popular in USA or Europe.
ML> he described it as "smells like feet and feels and tastes like rotten
ML> onion" when he was jay leno's show.

MLoo> The rotten onion part isn't too far off, but I don't mind
MLoo> the smell of durian and don't like the smell of feet.
MLoo> Various cheeses do, however, smell like feet.

i'm that way with some other foodstuffs... like chitlins... there's several
factors to consider in their cooking smell... some chitlins just smell and
others are actually pretty nice, comparatively speaking... in some cases, hagis
can also fall into the smelly group but nothing like chitlins ;)

-=> Mark Lewis said to Jim Weller <=-

ML> i have, however, seen him eat tambilok (aka mangrove worm), klia, and
ML> nutria... pretty (ummm) wierd stuff, there... there's also the
ML> deepfried day old chickens, soup #5, uok (aka coconut grub larvae),
ML> stuffed frog, and cuy (aka guinea pig) ;)

MLoo> We've got Otto on looking for a giant cuy to be the
MLoo> centerpiece of a Chinese banquet.

hehe...

JW> I would imagine nutria and cuy could be pretty tasty, much like
 JW> rabbit or squirrel.

MLoo> The worms may not be bad, and most deep-fried things taste
MLoo> good, why should day-old chickens be any different. Frog,
MLoo> of course, is pretty tasty, much like rabbit or squirrel.

i think the chicken thing was probably closer to the balut type of "revulsion"
factor for those watching... i've had frog legs numerous times and they don't
really "taste like chicken"... they're close but there's also an "aquatic"
taste to them as well... they're fun to cook too! the fresher the better!

i don't think the mangrove worms would be all that good if cooked... ya gotta
see the show and that episode to really get a "feel" for them... they use
machetes to chop away at the wood and then grab the worm and pull them out...
they can be right long, too... they use their fingers and basically pinch the
worm and run their fingers down it to squeeze out the wood pulp... then they
dip them into one or two "sauces" and then down the hatch! from the looks of
them, i seriously doubt they stand up to very much cooking of any kind...

 JW> But what's "klia"?
 ML> let's see...
 ML> it is morrocan... and...
 ML> ===== quote =====
ML> he (andrew zimmern) practically hurled on klia, which is a meat that
ML> is salted, dried, preserved in its own fat, and then cooked with eggs.
ML> he said it reeked of dead flesh.
 ML> ===== end quote =====
ML> (kinda sorta like hot dogs)

MLoo> There's nothing wrong with salted, dried, and preserved in its own
MLoo> fat. Something else had to have been done with it - like letting it
MLoo> rot for a while - to make it unappetizing like that.

i think part of it may be that "mystery meat" portion of it... i don't think i
can even start to speculate on what it may be... especially considering the "in
its own fat" notation...

ML> also, i see that it is actually spelled K'lia... the above is really
ML> all i can find on it... everywhere, all over the internet and even on
 ML> discovery.com's site...
ML> i did find that it is apparently a pretty popular name as well as an
ML> acronym for Kuala Lumpur International Airport...

MLoo> That's the first thing that came to my mind. Glen would probably
MLoo> agree that it is an excellent airport as airports go.

hehe... yeah, i was kinda surprised to find the acronym... that may also be why
it is so hard to find out anything about the food of the same name...
