Ärende: New Years gift!
=======================
-> RH> Mine was a freebie that came with my crockpot. I have a leave-in
-> RH> thermometer for the oven; the plastic thingies make me nervous.
->
-> I keep a thermometer in the oven and another in the fridge or freezer.
-> One of the things we learned the hard way in one of our moves--the
-> previous owner of a mobile home we were buying before Steve went into
-> the Army (we sold it before fully owning it when he went in) had left
-> some unintentional "surprises" for us. One was that there were no
-> markings on the oven dial so I guesstimated for a pizza that ended up
-> being close to charcoal. I put my own indicators on the dial (may have
-> ended up buying a new dial, I don't remember) to avoid future disasters
-> and we got an oven thermometer. The fridge/freezer one we bought
-> shortly after buying the $50. "Wonder" fridge several years before. A
-> small investment but one that has helped over the various moves and
-> places we've lived in.

That would be interesting. No temperature markings...oops. We had an old
electric that was always off by about 25F from what the knob said. We had
an oven thermometer in that one, but haven't bothered since.

-> -> Like I see like, what you mean, y'know. (G)
->
-> RH> Like yeah. Uhmmm, it's obvious when, like, someone mentions it.
->
-> To the point of making me want to correct the speaker to his face.
->
To the point of wanting to scream and run out of the room?

-> Probably nowhere near the real thing even in your imagination. We buy
-> the full fat real thing in cheese becausethe low fat imitaitons are so
-> bad.  Tried unsalted corn chips but had to go back to the salted ones;
-> the no salt ones were too flavorless. Most imitations are poor
-> imitators of the real thing.
->
Two words - soy chips. Gak.

-> I've had some do a better job than others.  Water temp is a factor too;
-> found that out when we were in HI; the water heater was set way too low.
-> We got it moved up a couple of times; once when we first realised the
-> problem and again, a few years later, on doctor's orders that my hot
-> water be set high enough (140) to kill any nasties like dust mites when
-> I wash bedding.

I'm not sure where this one is set, but air drying seems to work better.

-> RH> Even some of them probably had the talent, just not the time to use
-> RH> it. My grandfather was a machinist who built model train buildings
->  RH> for fun - from scratch.
->
-> My dad moved into a white collar job--he was the first of his family to
-> finish high school and graduate from college. He did/does model
-> railroad layouts still, not as much as he used to, but a lot of the
-> buildings are non kit.
->
Scratchbuilders unite!

-> -> So do you play the violin?
-> RH> I know which end has the tuning pegs, but that's about it. It's
just
-> IOW, no fiddling around for you. (G)

Not while the rome apple pie burns anyway!

->  RH> again, my
-> RH> maternal grandfather and a paternal great-uncle were both bakers.
-> RH> They both like making wedding cakes.
->
-> There's a science, a well as an art to that.

Yep. I've helped do wedding cakes before, and it's a fine line between a
good cake and a toppling mess.

-> -> nice wintergreen one which my teacher ended up dropping all over my
lab
-> -> book; the book smelled really nice the last few weeks of school.
->
-> RH> It could have been worse; it could have been artificial black
pepper.
->  RH> Or garlic.
->
-> Yes but they weren't choices we had in the "flavors" available.

Phew.  Good thing!

-> RH> of the size and the MS. I'd shop at a local store, but as often as
-> RH> not they don't have my size in anything wearable either. I want
stuff
-> RH> that looks decent, stays on, and doesn't hurt. I can have
everything
-> RH> but the last two.
->
-> I wear a common enough size but finding something that doesn't make my
-> feet hurt will be more of a challenge now. I have to have the dress
-> soes for a few occaisions but most of the time I'm in walking shoes,
-> sandels (once my foot gets better, almost all the time when we were in
-> HI) or other foot wear. My boots are really comfortable but now I've
-> got to wait a few more weeks before my foot feels good enough to try
-> wearing them.

I can get sneakers, but only if I'm willing to wear shoes with heels that
slop around. The same for heels and everything else. Will you need
something like a deep pocket or whatever they call it?

->
-> ->  RH> Uhmmm - yum?  Malt powder.
->
-> -> You like malted milk?
->
-> RH> Dunno - never had any. I've used malt syrup and malt powder in
-> RH> recipes, but only once or twice in milk.
->
-> Same powder.

Sounds good to me!
