Ärende: New Years gift!
=======================
Hi Ruth,

-> The last gas range/oven we had was in AZ; I'd keep my bread crusts on a
-> foil pie pan in the oven until I accumulated enough to crumb. The
-> climate there was dry enough to do so. Out in HI and now here, I pop

 RH> Not to mention mouse-proof!

Never had a problem with mice in AZ tho the potential for trouble was
there. OTOH, we had 2 in our house in HI after our neighbors packed
out. They kept their back yard sort of jungle-ish so I suspect a
combination of their having to mow before clearing housing and the pack
out brought the mice in. I know we weren't the only ones to deal with
mice over there too; on Maui after a long dry spring, the mice were
overrunning a large part of the island.

-> them into a bag in the freezer until I've got enough for a batch of
-> crumbs, then thaw, cube, oven dry and crumb by running thru the blender.

RH> I almost never make my own. I don't buy enough bread for it to
RH> really get stale, and the kind of I bring home doesn't make good bread
 RH> crumbs.

I make mine from the bread I bake. Gives everything I use them in a
nice flavor, not to mention being better for you. (G)

-> RH> To the point of wanting to scream and run out of the room?

-> Not yet but sometime I probably will.

 RH> ....when you can run.

One of these days...........

-> RH> Two words - soy chips. Gak.

-> Yes, I agree. Steve tried some since he'd got the lactose problem but
-> we've not bought any in a good while.

RH> There are some things humans just were NOT meant to eat.

And others that we were meant to eat but have to watch how much we do
eat, as in chocolate.

-> Easy way to check is with a thermometer stuck into running hot water.
-> From your description, it sounds like your water heater is set a bit

RH> Probably - it's an energy saving thing.

OK; I can understan that.

-> that sort from scratch; a box mix does't have the same taste.
-> Unfortunately, the box mix taste is what the majority of Americans have
-> come to accept as the way cake should taste--what a pity!

RH> I like the other kind better myself, but generally use a mix. It's a
RH> bit faster, and the people I bake for don't appreciate a scratch cake
RH> anyway. I'm sick of putting in the time to have the thing ignored in
 RH> favor of
RH> Nabisco cookies, so I use a box mix.

I've been known to do so from time to time as well.

-> Just don't take up reed intruments as well; don't want any sax &
-> violin-ce.

RH> I'll leave those to Michael. And Tarantino, the director of (fruit)
 RH> Pulp Fiction.

After all, he's from the land of fruits, nuts and flakes.

-> youth pastor is getting married the end of the month; his fiancee is
-> hypergycemic so she said that the cake will have a whipped cream

RH> That could be interesting. I hope someone remembers to put cream of
RH> tartar in the whipped cream, otherwise they'll have floor frosting!

I suspect there will be no problem remembering to do so. If GA's late
Aprils are like the ones we had in NC, the weather will be warm enough
to be a reminder. Supposed to get right at or a bit below freezing the
next few night tho, with highs in the upper 50s.

-> Yes, the pineapple one gone bad was stomach turning enough. When I went
-> thru the lab sciences, the classroom/lab was right above the cafeteria.

RH> Ewwww - did it get everyone downstairs too?

A faint drift of it went thru the whole school but it was concentrated
in a small area around the classroom.

-> RH> something like a deep pocket or whatever they call it?

-> Something with good arch support; surpisingly thru all this, I've not
-> lost the high arch I've had in my foot. Long term wearing comfort will
-> be another factor. I'll want something that will be comfortable for at

RH> Definitely. My feet are pancakes, but I've never found a dress shoe
 RH> with those specs.

I have, from time time, but it's been about 10 year since I bought my
last dress shoes. Those felt good in the store but afterward hurt; the
ones that fit/felt the best I bought in Frankfurt, Germany about 18
years ago.  I've still got them but only until I can find a replacement;
they're my desparation, gotta wear dress shoes for this occaision but
haven't found any good ones yet shoes.

-> BTW, we were loaned a DVD the other day--"Beyond the Next Mountain"
-> (dealt with the translation of the Bible into one of the northeast (as
-> in India) Indian languages. Fascinating! In reading the credits after,
-> found that Maddur Jaffrey (sp?) had a part in it. I found the last of my
-> cook books the other day; one of them is her's on Indian cooking. I
-> think I know a woman who came from one of those tribes; she was a member
-> of our church in HI.

RH> Interesting. I have a friend who's up in Arunachal now. That's about
RH> as Northeast as you can get without going across the Chinese border -
 RH> and
RH> you're over it according to the Chinese.

We had a young man go to India for a couple of years from our church in
HI. He met his (American) now wife over there; they came back a couple
of years ago so he could work on a Master's degree. BTW, if you ever
get a chance to hear the India Children's Choir, go--and enjoy the
program. They're from these tribes dealt with in the movie & performed
at our church Wed. night. Afterward, we got DVDs of their performance,
the above movie, a book about the man the movie featured and a hand
woven shawl in the traditional colors/patterns of the area (black, red &
white). Until about 1910, these tribes were head hunters.

Catch you later,
