Ärende: Picnic Plans
====================
Time has come to firm up the picnic plans. Up until now, I have
said that the picnic will be the weekend of 28 July -- i.e. either
Saturday the 28th or Sunday the 29th. Which day is chosen will
depend on several factors, including other activities people might
like to do together and other travel plans.

The Washington/Baltimore area has a lot of things that people might
want to visit as a tourist. We encourage people to stay in the area
for more than just the weekend and do sightseeing on their own. We
expect that group activities might be Friday, Saturday and Sunday with
the picnic itself on Saturday or Sunday -- yet to be decided based on
  responses to this message.

Some of the food related things which people might like to do as a
  group are:

   1. A visit for Maryland steamed crabs.
One highly recommended place is the Harris Crab House,
   http://www.harriscrabhouse.com/

This is perhaps an hour's drive from our house, across the Bay
Bridge. The traffic going to and from Maryland's Eastern shore and
Ocean City can be pretty horrendous at certain times, especially
Friday and Sunday evenings. That counts against going there at
either of those times. We would like to hear if this is
something that people would like to do. It would pretty much be a
half day trip or more to go there, have crabs (or whatever) and
return. If you have never done Maryland crabs, it could be fun and
interesting. It is not a quick meal -- but rather an extended
social event. [Carol -- what do you know about the traffic and how
   busy the restaurant might be?]

   2. Visits to local ethnic markets.
There are several good ethnic markets within a 20-30 minute drive.
We have two large Korean/Asian markets (one 10 minutes away and the
other 20+ minutes away), a moderate sized Indian market (about 20
minutes away in another direction), a small Indian market only
about 5 minutes away and a small Mediterranean / Mideast market also
about 10 minutes away. We have been to all of these and think that
they are worth going to *IF* you want or need that sort of thing and
*IF* it is not available where you live. There are other markets of
various ethnic groups in the 30-45 minute range that we have
addresses for, but have not been to.

Some of these might be combined with casual dining visits to places
in the neighborhood (or even at the market itself).

   3. Casual food trips
Depending on desires of folks who are here before the weekend, we
could go to any of several eating places that we like and would
recommend. All are within a 20-30 minute drive. They might make for
easy dinner outings after your day trips to Washington or Baltimore.

Both 2 and 3 above are things which can easily be spur-of-the moment
things and do not need to impact planning. The visit across the Bay
Bridge (itself a decent sight) to Harris would be a major event.

The primary decision, for which we want the group's input, is:

Do you want to go to The Harris Crab house?

Do you have a preference or not for the main picnic to be Saturday or
   Sunday.

I would greatly appreciate response from all who are contemplating
coming to the picnic on *both* of those questions -- even if the
   response is "I don't care".

You can reply directly into the echo -- or send me email at the
   address below.
