=======================
Hiya Ruth!
->
-> -> again. One of the nicest places we stayed at on our way east was a
-> -> little off the beaten path motel in NM.
->
-> hn> Boy there are LOTS of little places around too! the old Route 66 goes
-> hn> through New Mexico and there are just oodles of little "motor courts"
-> hn> along the wayside! We've had a wonderful time...we certainly got our
->
-> There sure are! We took a county road to get east of I-40 after hearing
-> about an accident closing the eatbound lanes for several hours. Ended
-> up not making as good a time as we'd wanted so stayed the night along
-> the way rather than driving in the dark. The room had some beautiful
-> hand made quilts on the beds; I had Steve get some pictures so I can
-> maybe replicate them. This was after we'd been turned off I-10 just
-> west of Deming because of tornadoes west of Las Cruces; we'd planned to
-> get off a couple miles further up the road but no problem since we knew
-> the area well enough to get to the road we wanted.
->
We certainly enjoyed the small roads and side trips that we took while in New
Mex. Lots of wonderful scenery to enjoy! We made this trip "Albuquerque and
North" which basically meant Albuquerque and Santa Fe and some side day
trips in between to some Pueblo's and the "outback".

-> hn> exercise in ..and the altitude had a big effect on us as well...we
-> hn> were told we're getting 30% less oxygen at this altitude than at
home!
->
-> That'll do you, especially if you're not used to it.
->
It certainly did! We slept the sleep of the exhausted each night!

-> hn> Tomorrow Anne flies back to
-> hn> Tacoma and (probably) I'll head west as well. Was originally planning
-> hn> on driving north through Denver, but the weather does NOT look
-> hn> propitious in that direction so I'll head west through AZ again...may
->
-> No probelm there, AZ has a lot to make cutting thru it worthwhile. If
-> you used I-10 (presuming you're beyond that now), I hope you stopped at
-> Stout's Cider Mill east of Willcox. Then stop at Texas Canyon (rest
-> area) about 25 miles west for some great photo ops!
->
I took I-40 as it's a straight shot west from Albuquerque, and unless I plan to

make stops for photo's I usually DRIVE when I drive (grin). I went from
Albuquerque to Kingman AZ on the first day and didn't leave ABQ till
afternoon. Decided not to go north through Vegas and went from Kingman AZ
to Redding CA with only two stops for gas and bathroom...then yesterday
(Monday) went from Redding to Tacoma (647 miles) with one stop to fill the
tank in Medford OR....left Redding about 8 am got to Tacoma at 4:01pm...I
made good time (grin). When Anne is aboard we make a LOT more stops, and
when I am just out cruising for photo places I may not do more than 100-200
miles a day....but like I said I have a tendency to get from one place to the
other with few stops otherwise.
->
-> hn> cut north through Las Vegas or may just continue on to Calif and
head
->
-> Wave "hi" to Rachel, David and Robert in Vegas. (G)
->
In retrospect I would have preferred to go through Vegas if only to put down
a bet on the Mariners to win the world Series....Wonder what the odds are?
(grin) But I didn't think of that unitl I was already in California headed
north.
Had a wonderful drive across the Mojave with the Ocotillo in bloom!
->
-> hn> north there. Anne has been quite adventurous on dining but she's still
-> hn> trying to stay away from any level of heat....I on the other hand have
-> hn> been delighting in chile pork stew, chile chicken stew, chorizo eggs,
-> hn> and tamales, and more!
->
-> Sounds like good eating all around. I"d like to try making chile verde
-> but can't until Steve gets over his pig-a-phobia. Went with a group from
-> church Saturday to Buccaneer's Club, a small seafood place just north of
-> Brunswick. The place was small but serving sizes were huge! I took
-> about 2/3 of my small plate of flounder, scallops and shrimp home.
->
We at quite well on vacation...now it's back to the diet !
->
-> -> I've got another loaf of bread in the machine, on the bake cycle. Ever
-> -> since I started using the yeast specifically made for whole grain, I"ve
-> -> had nothing but beautiful bread. This will probably be the last loaf
-> -> made totally with King Arthur flour; I suspect we'll have to grind some
-> -> of the wheat we bought for the next one.
->  hn> ->
-> hn> We have a breadmaker that we've never used (grin) We may do the
same
-> hn> as you and grind our own wheat to make good whole wheat (and
other
-> hn> grains) bread on our own.
->
-> We got the original bread machine after I found I couldn't knead bread
-> very well after breaking my wrists. Wore that out in about 6 years and
-> replaced it; now this one is showing signs that it'll need replacing in
-> the not so distant future. We like home made whole wheat bread better
-> than (most) store breads so our machine gets used on a regular basis.
->
Hopefully ours will get some use eventually (grin)
chat with you soon
