They're reconstructing the beach now ...

I got back Sunday night in a driving rain - the block
between the subway station and the apartment was enough
to soak me pretty soakingly and cure me of any idiotic
wish to go out the next day. The winds were beginning to
whip up, too. Sounded like a good 50; the forecast was
for up to 40 with gusts into the 50s, but the way these
buildings are lined up, they take the brunt of an east
wind, and that we certainly were doing. I took a hot
shower and plopped into bed, with the windowshade
flapping despite the windows being as closed as I can
get them. Monday I woke up at about 4 after having had
dreams of the wind flexing the windows and breaking them.
Well, there -was- water on my face: turns out the rain
had been forced around the rubber gaskets, and there was
considerable leakage - and drippage onto my head. There
was not much to do but stop up the leaks as best I could
and get up to watch the weather. I did a little work on
my father's taxes (groan) and looked at the waves, which
were as big as the ones I watched during the hurricane
a few years ago. The waves never got substantially over
the seawall, but still a lot of beach got pushed up over
it, some all the way across both roads and to the foot
of the little hill that the apartments rest on. The winds
roared through the day, subsiding around bedtime.

Right now, it's winds at 17 gusting to 28, and it sounds
like nothing at all. They seem to have cleaned up the
road and put some of the sand back where it belongs, and
the planes are flying (I can hear them).

Speaking of storm, I hear that the latest mass murderer
was a Chinese kid ... so much for model minority.
