   I think that Thursday night ought to be something simple, close to
   home.  I know that after having driven 6-8 hours, I would not then
   want to do another 1 1/2 hours each way to Harris or similar.

   Together, we'll figure it out based on the input received.

  The list I posted had "internet" rates or no discount rates.   It is
  entirely possible that folks could do much better at some one place
  via Priceline, travelocity, or the like.  It is also true that people
  could do at least slightly better using AAA, AARP or the like.  If
  anyone finds any really good deals -- I hope that they post them.  It
  is nicer when people are staying close together.

  Here is a curious recipe.   It would seem that "drum sticks" refers to
  some sort of vegetable -- but what?  I was unable to find it using a
  short Wiki search.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Sambhar
 Categories: Indian, Filling, Dosa
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
  1 1/2 c  Tur dal
    150 g  Brinjal (cubed 1 inch)*
      4    Drum sticks (Cut 2 to 3
           Inches long)*
    100 g  Onions (Preferably small)
      1 ts Turmeric powder
      4    Dry whole red chillies
      1 ts Coriander seeds
      6    Pepper corns
    1/2 ts Channa Dal
    1/2 ts Urad dal
      2 tb Cooking oil
           Few sprigs Curry leaves
    1/2 ts Mustard seeds
    1/4 ts Methi seeds
      1 pn Asafatida
      1    Ball Tamarind (Lime size)
           To taste Salt
    1/4 ts Cummin seeds.
 
  Method:-
  Boil tur dal with turmeric till well done. Mash well.
  
  Soak tamarind in warm water for some time, and squeeze out the pulp.
  
  Roast red chillies, coriander, methi and cummin seeds with channa dal
  and urad dal. Grind to a fine paste.
  
  Peel onions, keep whole if small or cut into bite size pieces.
  
  Saute onions lightly, boil brinjals and drum sticks and add all
  vegetables to the tur dal.
  
  Stir in the masala, and bring to boil. If the sambhar is too thick,
  add water. Add salt and tamarind pulp and boil again.
  
  For tempering, heat a little oil, add mustard seeds, and when they
  crackle add asafatida and curry leaves. Pour hot into the sambhar
  before serving.
  
  *- may substitute with other vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, ...
  whatever is available and one likes. The drum sticks however do impart
  an unique flavour.
