Speaking of which, we are in the midst of a storm that
has dropped ca 10" on our heads over the weekend (the
town half a mile directly south had 10.02" as of this
morning and the one two miles directly north had 9.66"
as of 8 pm last evening). The weather service report
says, oddly, that "this storm compares favorably to the
October 21-22, 1996 event for northeastern Massachusetts."
Carol was here for most of this.

Yesterday, the train service to the airport was interrupted,
and the MBTA provided substitute buses, at which announcement
one slightly inebriated gent complained loudly to nobody in
particular, using locutions that were not suitable for tender
echo ears (even more awful than the noises perpetrated by the
chorus for which I played on Saturday), as though he had been
singled out individually for such treatment. It took a bit of
extra time to go to Carol's airline, where there was a huge
check-in line. She eventually escaped two hours late.

The Swiss have succeeded in doing what the Japanese
always wanted to do - gain economic hegemony over large
chunks of the world. Plus they make some of the nastier
wines and beers available. The cheeses can be tasty,
although I don't much like them either.

Our baby octopodes are approximately 5 cm +- in length
from top of cephalo to bottom of pod and are quite tender
indeed, with a pleasant crunch.

Ovine milk has about 12 percent less lactose than bovine,
but that's apparently enough, coupled with the lower reliance
on uncheesed milk in the Mediterranean diet, to make a bit of
a difference to many. It would not make a difference to me.

Goat stew
cat: Indian, main, stew
servings: 6

4 Tb oil
6 green cardamom pods
2 black cardamom pods
6 cloves
1 stick cinnamon
2 bay leaves
10 peppercorns
4 c diced red onion
3 Tb chopped ginger
2 Tb chopped garlic
4 Thai peppers
2 1/2 lb goat thighs or shoulder
- cut in large pieces, with bones
1 Tb coriander powder
2 ts cumin powder
1 ts turmeric
1 1/2 ts cayenne
1 c diced unpeeled fresh tomatoes
3/4 c crushed canned tomatoes
2 Tb tomato paste
3/4 c yogurt
2 ts salt
1 ts garam masala
2 Tb chopped cilantro

Saute whole spices in oil over medium heat until they
begin to pop. Stir in onion, ginger, garlic, and peppers.
Add meat and brown about 20 min, stirring. Add powdered
spices and stir for 1 min. Add tomato products with a
little water. Stir. Beat yogurt well and then stir in
with salt and 1/ ts garam masala. Cook 8-10 min or until
fat separates. Add 2 1/4 c more water and bring to a
boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 30 min, stirring
occasionally. Add 1 c water and cook 20 more min. Add
2 c water and cook 1 hr or until meat is tender. Place
in serving bowl and sprinkle with cilantro and remaining
garam masala.
