I was in Jamestown for the memorial service of a friend of
mine, Bruce Murray, who used to conduct the Des Moines
Symphony, who had been in ill health for a long time (he
didn't take care of himself and drank a whole lot - we did
more Scotch together than music, I am afraid). Cooked dinner
for the family of his adopted son (this Albanian kid who
came to America to study but had nowhere to turn; I have no
idea how Bruce and he found each other). Made vegetarian
fried rice (for Sorana, Edor's girlfriend), shrimp in cream
sauce, sauteed asparagus, and pork fried rice (at the
request of the Jewish contingent, and I am neither meaning
disrespect nor kidding). There was some question about the
eating habits all round, but Sorana was the only troublesome
one, vegetarianism being what it is: turns out Edor's family,
which had managed to get out shortly after the end of the
Hoxha regime, is Christian and omnivorous.

Shrimp in cream sauce made with found ingredients
cat: found, European, shellfish, pasta, main
servings: 6

1 md onion, minced 
1 sm red bell pepper, minced 
1/2 lb mushrooms, sliced thin 
2 Tb olive oil 
salt 
1 pt whipping cream 
1 c dry white wine 
3 cloves garlic, minced fine 
- with 1 ts salt 
thyme (lots - I loves me thyme) 
oregano (a little) 
1 lb md shrimp, peeled 
1 lb linguini fini

Wilt vegetables (adding in the order listed) in the oil.
Salt to taste. Set aside.

Set cream to reduce. When it comes to the boil, add the
garlic and herbs. Let reduce by a bit more than half. Add
wine. Reduce a bit more.

Dry-saute the shrimp in a nonstick pan. Add shrimp and
vegetables to the cream; let cook over low flame.

Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain
thoroughly, toss with sauce, and serve.

Went to the local booze store, which, great local scandal,
has been bought by a foreigner. When I heard that, I
figured, what, someone from off island, maybe Wickford or
North Kingstown? Well, the new owner is an Indian whose
name, stereotypically, is Patel. 


Santa Maria Justina Pinot Grigio (Sudtirol-Alto Adige) 01 -
still fresh, which the new proprietor guaranteed. Grapy, a
little green; I didn't care for it, but our Albanians
apparently thought it was just like what they were used to.
So I eschewed it in favor of the

Mitchellton Merlot 00 (Vic) - on sale for a ridiculous
price; I don't know why, except that the first bottle had
just a whiff of cork taint. Rich chocolate, berries, nice
smoothness on the palate. Medium rich berry finish.

We got a couple SBs as well, for private sipping by the
hostess/ organizer and those who might know something about
wine; but I didn't press for these to be opened in my
presence: The Jibe and Kim Crawford, the former at a
competitive price, the latter well jacked up because of the
wine's good showing in Wine Spectator or somesuch place.

Mouton Cadet reserve 02 - Quite thin and acid, peppery,
cedary, but way too sour. Not as good as Burt's regular
Mouton Cadet from the old days, I'd reckon. Good long
peppery-woody finish.

Ch. Cap de Merle 04 (Lussac-St. Emilion) - pleasant
plum-pepper nose. A bit thin on the palate, a disappointment
as it cost 7x as much as the Mitchellton. Strawberries if
anything (actually, strawberry Jell-O) on a finish that took
a dive after a few seconds.

CK Mondavi Merlot 02 - actually better than the Mouton
Cadet, though a bit on the cloying side owing to a lot of
sugar (this is a bulk wine). Cherries and plastic on the
palate. Not much of a finish.

Muscat des Papes nv (Beaumes-de-Venise) - extremely sweet,
floral, tropical fruit punchy with some peach-pear tones.
Complex in a rather nasty way.
