*** Quoting Glen Jamieson from a message to Carol Shenkenberger ***

CS> Could you define 'vertical grill'? I am wondering if it's close to
CS> my 'vertisserie' (vertical rotisserie vice normal horizontal one).
GJ> meat stationary and surrounded by elements?

CS> It rotates the meat around stationary elements. I may google later to
CS> find a picture for you but for now, it's like a rotisserie that you
CS> might buy for home except this one is tall and thin comparitively and
CS> the heat, which rises, is used by a metal teflon coated 'crock' at the
CS> top to allow you to cook a second dish at the same time. It's not all
CS> that far off from the bigger units I saw in Jebel Ali for making
CS> shwarma meat except this one is enclosed.

GJ> I think I get the picture. That could be quite a space saver. I
GJ> suppose the fat from the chook or duck or squirrel would collect in a
GJ> bowl at the bottom and saved for cooking your hash browns in.

Yes, it is fairly trim on the countertop and has a pan at the bottom that
collects the fat. Since we dont want that much fat, this colects more than we
use up.

I've gotten a bit of a rut on the top crock (used only whe we cok meat in the
bottom) and normally just dice up some potatos and carrots or other root
veggies and add olive oil, garlic, and parsley to it. Last time though I made
a sort of ratatoolie sort of thing with eggplant and canned tomatoes and
tossed in some Jufran Bannana sauce. It has more use than I have explored as
of yet.

GJ> get good commercial ice cream, I would not bother.

CS> I can too but we are the rare type who eat almost no sweets at all, so
CS> being able to adjust the 'sweetness' appeals to us. That it makes only
CS> 2 cups fnal product was a plus for us.

GJ> I also eat very little sweet stuff or desserts - unless someone else
GJ> cooks it. (g) The brand of ice-cream that I occasionally buy is not
GJ> excessively sweet.
GJ>

Well, each has their own limits. I have hypoglycemia in a non-traditional,
non-pre-diabetic version so have some careful choices to make. I cut sweets
very long ago so I could have a few beers. Slim tolerance margin and over
time, I really do not *like* sweet things much. It;s an ingrained response
and Charlotte shares it though she likes a bit of sweet now and again. I like
ice cream but it isnt often that I want any even if offered for free.

CS> Electric can opener (gave the last gifted one away unopened).
GJ> I use mine often, as I use a lot of cans of diced tomato in my
GJ> cooking; it was bought second-hand years ago.

CS> I am happy with my manual one. It's not the cheap type and works well
CS> though it needs sharpening at last.

GJ> Is that a bolted down fixed one or a "hand-carried" one?

Hand carried type. Not spectacular looking but has a nice plastic grip.

CS> Grin, well Dale loves his George Forman grill. For me, I seem to use a
CS> frying pan with deep sides to do the same things or in some cases, my
CS> vertisserie which is fairly new to us but a high use item.
CS> I've tried the George F. grill and remain pretty much convinced it is
CS> not useful for us due to cooking styles used. On the other hand, their
CS> crockpot is probably dusty <g>.

GJ> I have thought about something like that George F grill, but I rarely
GJ> eat steaks, and when I do I use the outside barbecue. I often use the
GJ> grill element in the oven for grilling chicken wings or similar.

It seems to have more uses than that, but doesnt fit my particular cookery
style. Mostly it's used for boneless cuts of meat and apparently heat searing
vegetables cut up right (possibly lightly oil the veggies). I am not sure if
you can do wings in it well but it might be able to do them. It would cost
less energy (electric) to use to do them than the oven if it works well.

Every leftover idea I have for that unit, in my own cookery, got replaced by
something else. I might have taken to it in the early days, but they were not
around then. The final replacement was my veritssirie with top crock. Sweet
unit for my style cookery and it's the top crock that makes it just so perfect
for us.

GJ> My pressure cooker is used regularly for stews, roo tail, lamb shanks,
GJ> osso buco and the like. I might use it for cooking beans. It saves a
GJ> lot of time and electricity. Yesterday I used it for gulyas, using a
GJ> tough cut of roo meat. Cooked in 15 minutes. Tonight I will use my
GJ> new electric frypan to cook (roo) meatballs in tomato sauce.

Cool! I am unsure of beans ina pressure cooker. There was a safety note to
not overload them or they kinda explode and clog the steam vent? That could
be bad...
                                       xxcarol
