Ärende: French food 482
=======================
Hi Michael,

ML> of the big Bavarian breweries, so the beer at least is authentic.
RH> None of us had the beer

 ML> Ha. Figured.

You saw that Steve, Rachel and I aren;t beer drinkers, David was driving
and Robert is about 18 years too young (would have been 19 years too
young when we went) to drink beer legally.

ML> There's a Hofbrauhaus in Springfield, not too far from Clean
ML> Dave's place, where the food is somewhat better - the goose
ML> tasted. Also, should you find yourself in Boston, Jacob Wirth
ML> still serves decent (heavy) German food.
RH> IF we ever find ourselves in Boston and you're not there to give us
RH> the grand tour, I'll keep that in mind.

ML> Clean Dave is within half an hour of the place. I hope he
ML> doesn't mind my de facto volunteering him for the guide thing.

If we are in his territory, yes, we will ask him. But for Boston, we'd
hope you were there to guide, if not, we've a suggestion of a place to
go. The only more upscale place we got to try in the time we were in
Mass. was the Bull Run Tavern somewhere in the greater Ayer/Fitchburg or
Leomeister vicinity. We went there only a couple of days after our
arrival (Steve had eaten there before from previous TDYs to Fort
Devens.) so I'm not really sure where it was.

RH> I've not been to France and probably the closest I've come to French
 RH> food is crepes. (G)

ML> You'd be surprised. I'd bet you've had something such as the
ML> recipe enclosed, which is French enough.

No, surprisingly, I've not had anything like them--but they do look
good.

ML> said to serve decent German food. If we can get past our urge
ML> for Maryland seafood, perhaps an expedition could be rounded
 ML> up to investigate.
RH> Sounds good to me. We'll be coming in on Thursday so maybe Thursday
 RH> night?

ML> Dale seems to be on this one. He was looking at a pub type
ML> place called Blob's Park (great name, eh) for Friday. It

That would work also, especially since we've no idea when we'll be
getting in on Thursday.

ML> has the advantage (disadvantage for you) of being largely
ML> a boozerium; it has the disadvantage (to me; not, perhaps

We always volunteer to be the designated driver/navigator.

ML> to others) of having nightly folkdancing; and it has the
ML> general advantage of being fairly cheap.

The dancing I could live without; the relatively low cost is a big plus.

 ML> [re sour-and-rotten]
RH> Looks similar to what I do but I add juniper berries to the marinade
RH> mix and use red wine vinegar. I also eliminate the salt; tastes just
 RH> as good without it.

ML> Ich hasse juniper berries! And a touch of salt, to me, is needed.
ML> Not a whole lot, just a bit.

Most of the time I leave it out of whatever I'm making with no
appreciable difference in taste. Other times I may give the grinder just
a quarter to half turn. Rarely do I use the full amount most recipes
call for.

-=> Ruth Haffly said to Hap Newsom <=-

RH> Now that's a new one on me.

ML> They're afraid of someone bringing contraband in, whether
ML> that be booze or nitroglycerin.

More likely booze; nitro would be in little tablets. (G) Of course
booze can be pretty explosive in its own right.

hn> birch beers as well...but for really good birch beer and ginger beer
hn> you can go north to Canada...it's quite popular in British Columbia
hn> (or was last time we went!)
RH> OK, that's interesting. We never found it outside of the
 northeast, especially Pennsylvania.

ML> I've seen birch beer (originally typed bear) mostly in the
ML> northeast (especially New England), but it does occur in
ML> Canada pretty regularly. Who was the genius who originally

OK, it was not a local item in the part of the northeast where I grew
up.

ML> decided to make a drink out of a tree? Probably the same ones who
tapped other tree's sap for sugar, most likely the indigenous
 population.

RH> BTW, I thought of a reason you can use with Anne to get her United
RH> ticket--tell her you want to see some Shipp mates. (G) Think she'll
 RH> fall for that?

ML> I'd say that would make her definitely forbid it!

You saw the spelling I deliberately used.

 ML> Moelleux au chocolat
 ML> Cat: dessert
 ML> Servings: 4

Drooooooooooooooooollllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!! (G)
