========================
ML> Baltimore Magazine review of Cafe de Paris:
ML> enormous hunk of pig [cote de porc a la normande]
DS> I'm not sure if that is a compliment, a dig, or simply a menu item
 DS> listing?

I took it out of context of what was in fact a compliment,
but I just pointed out the part that would be interesting
to me.

ML> Looks like you're trying to steer me in a direction,
ML> perhaps with other vegetable lovers in tow.
DS> No steering -- just suggesting some possibilities you might or
DS> might now have thought about.

The reviews stating what they did, and my inclinations being
what they are, I feel steered toward an enormous hunk of pig
sometime, though.

DS> Serve beans with sounds more like Gail's dish. In my dish, which
DS> they called moros y Cristianos, the beans and rice were cooked
DS> together almost like a jambalaya. Ended up pretty dry.

I think I've had a similar dish, but I'm not sure that it
was called by the same name. It didn't particularly thrill me.

Re Blob's Park:

DS> The portion sizes were adequate, about what I might expect from
DS> lunch size orders rather than what is often the trend of super-size
DS> dinner portions that you cannot finish. We finished it all, and
DS> were satisfied. We shared a small piece of Black Forest cake for
 DS> $3.

That's thoughtful of them. I prefer modest sizes with modest
prices and the option of ordering more.

DS> I also had an appetizer order of a crab cake for $5.00. It was
DS> not bad, perhaps better than the one I had for twice that money at
DS> Kaufman's a week or two ago. The waitress said that they were
DS> made there (as opposed to pre-formed from Phillip's restaurant or
DS> the like). The meat did not seem to have much filler. It did not
DS> have much in the way of lump meat, but it was a little bit less
DS> shredded than the Kaufman version. Size was bigger than a golf
DS> ball, but not by too much. For that price, a decent buy.

If I were to make 30 golf-ball-size crab balls, that probably
would be less than 4 lb of crabmeat, which I might be able to
afford by myself.

DS> We each had a beer. One pint for $3.75. Gail had a bitburge pils,
DS> described as a pilsner. It was light in color, good flavor and
DS> the type she likes. I went for a darker brew called spaten
DS> oktoberfest, which was the type I like. We both enjoyed our
DS> choices. Both of those beers could have been available for $10 per
 DS> pitcher.

For good German beer (I agree on Spaten, which is quite tasty),
this is a quite good price.

DS> All in all, I think that this is a place worth considering. It
DS> was fun to sit and sip our beer and people watch the dancers. I
DS> don't know that I'd want to be there for one of their oktoberfest
DS> events when they fill the hall, but on a summer friday night they
 DS> have plenty of space.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like a potentially pleasant
diversion. I'd be for it.

-> members. Tonight, there were two of them present. One guy on the
-> drums and one guy singing and playing accordian.
CB> "Here's your accordion, welcome to Hell."

What's the definition of perfect pitch? When you throw the
accordion into the dumpster and it lands right on the banjo.

-> All in all, I think that this is a place worth considering. It was
-> fun to sit and sip our beer and people watch the dancers.
CB> How loud was it? Could you easily have a conversation?

Hall seats a thousand. No matter what the instruments, unless
they were grossly overamplified (in which case we would have
heard about this), only two of them wouldn't make all that
awful a noise. Even accordions. Even drums.

-=> Dave Sacerdote said to Dale Shipp <=-

 DSac> I checked out their website - http://www.blobspark.com/ - and
DSac> it's the sort of hokey experience that Maryanne, Lynn, and I would
 DSac> like. [g]
DSh> I'm surprised you did not mention the 70 brands of beer?

I would have.

DS> For me, the polkas, tacky atmosphere and cheap sausage dishes
DS> are the attraction, in the same way that our Hu Ke Lau is
DS> attractive for the cheesy stage show, faux Polynesian decor
DS> and excellent egg rolls. 70 brands of beer (Blob) or massive,
DS> stupor-inducing cocktails (Hu Ke Lau) are merely the sideshow. [g]

We're talking atmosphere here! But if the food were bad or a
bad deal, I agree the atmosphere wouldn't count.

DS> Thanks for checking the place out, BTW. We'd certainly be up for
 DS> a visit there.

Ditto. It might be a hoot with a bunch of folks.
