-1- I didn't think I could keep up with the last batch of blue
cheese; it just kept growing and growing, faster than I could
consume it. I ended up with blue cheese, blue cream cheese, blue 
sour cream and blue ranch dressing. I had them daily on steaks,
burgers, sandwiches, and salads, in mashed potatoes, as a dip, with
fruit and champagne, and with crackers, onions, pickles and beer.
And it is finally used up. I love the stuff but I think it'll be a
year or so before I buy any more.

-2- The "champagne" was Deinhard Lila Riesling Sekt. It was new to
me and a real delight: lots of tiny bubbles, crisp, clean, good
acid, slightly floral, slightly fruity and just a touch of sweetness
(rated a 2 on the scale). It was around $15 a bottle (probably only
be $12 in Alberta and $10 in the U.S.) so we can afford to have it
often. And we will.

-3- We had talked here about little herring steaks and kippers. I
was lamenting that I hadn't had any for years. Roslind made note and
went looking; she couldn't find the canned herring steaks or any real
kippers but did come up with some pretty decent canned ones.... John
West naturally smoked kipper fillets in brine from Yarmouth, Nova
Scotia. The ingredients were smoked herring fillets, water and salt,
period. The label was honest enough to state 190 grams, 150 grams
drained. The fish was lightly smoked and much lighter tasting than
the old Connors brand which was packed in oil and that I ate as a
kid. Even the brine was tasty so I saved it. I split the can into
three portions and had them my three favourite ways: gently warmed
in bacon fat and served for breakfast garnished with a strip of
bacon beside scrambled eggs with chives, on an open face sandwich of
rye bread, salted butter, horseradish and a slice of onion and in a
small chowdah. The chowder was composed of celery, onions and small
diced potatoes sauteed in bacon fat, some milk, a splash of cream,
a splash of flat Deinhard, the brine from the can, lots of black
pepper and finally the minced herring stirred in at the end. We'll be
having John West products in the house again too.
