-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> That is one aspect of the US military which I have always admired.
GJ> They certainly officially accepted the idea of racial equality long
GJ> before the Civil Rights movement gained strength. There was a

ML> Although not without some bumps in the road. There was the
ML> issue of mixing of blood: the American Red Cross insisted on
ML> keeping separate stocks of white folks' and black folks' blood
ML> for transfusion, with the latter of course in relatively short

As my mother was in the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service during WW2,
I heard a lot about the identification of blood groups and sub-groups.
The proportions of the groups were different in different races, and I
think the rarest group in the "white" blood was much more common in
"black" blood. Did the ARC keep the two sets of groups separately in
segregated fridges?

ML> supply. One Colonel Morrison was in charge of a military
ML> hospital in Italy in WWII, and he raised holy heck trying to
ML> get that idiotic policy overturned. He failed but I believe
ML> ordered the blood to be used as needed anyway. I don't know
ML> whether this is documented anyplace, but I used to date his
ML> daughter and heard much more about the corruption of the Red
 ML> Cross from him.

For someone desperate to get "AB" blood for a seriously injured
patient, it certainly would seem criminal not to use a suitable blood
from the "white" source when none was available from the "coloured"
source - or vice versa!

ML> I went to a segregated high school ("for the use and benefit of the
ML> White race only"), and we didn't read that book there. On the other
GJ> Could I assume that your lot there was not a happy one?

ML> Correct. First, the headmaster had to issue an ukase that
ML> the yellow race was a "subspecies of the white race," the
ML> levels of wrongness of which I cannot begin to describe.

Amazing how some otherwise intelligent people can rationalise! It is
possible, by an equally convoluted reasoning, to show that the yellow
race is a later, and superior development of the white race.

I won't go into the machinations by which you and your sister were
inducted into that school, as I am sure that would open a deep can of
worms.

ML> Then, as I and my sister were quite the curiosity, we
ML> received substantial scrutiny from all and sundry.

And no doubt some cruel name calling.

GJ> I'm surprised that America didn't have any native snails before then.
GJ> Certainly the snails I have eaten in Europe look identical to the
GJ> Australian ones. Although some ethnic restaurants here serve snails,

ML> The native snails are quite different from the Burgundy snails,
ML> which are what either Manny or Dave was referring to. The fact
ML> is that European snails (considered edible) were introduced
ML> into the U.S.; they compete with the native species (not
ML> considered edible but probably edible anyway).

Have the European ones taken over from the locals, or do they just
inhabit their own niche in the ecology? In Australia the European ones
are almost universal in home gardens where European vegetables are
grown. The tiny native species remain in the bush, happily feeding on
native plants.

GJ> I have read that you shouldn't eat slugs, as they are often poisonous.

ML> Probably not very poisonous, although their slime is said to
ML> be very peppery to taste (not a problem for some) - in any
ML> case, a careful preparation of purging, parboiling, and
ML> cleaning should render them just another peculiar source
 ML> of protein.

With that reassurance I can go ahead and experiment; or would if Chooky
had left me any slugs to experiment on. Of course her continued
existence would indicate a non-poisonous quality of slugs.

GJ> My mother told me that when I was very
GJ> young she found me eating garden snails, raw. I was given away by the
GJ> green slime around my mouth.

ML> And you hav been drinking rough red ever since to get the taste
 ML> out of your mouth?

That must be my unconscious reason for doing so. Now I know!
