It was sweeter than the rest of the fruit, so the people at
National or Capital or whatever Airlines it was had had to
actually put cherries in from another source (I think; it
was after all 52 years ago).

Sometimes even I hide behind Occam: it is most likely that
the DC-4 or 6 (whichever it was that loaded from the wrong
side (starboard) of the plane) bouncing its way across the
Appalachians caused me to be sick. If it were the cherry
that actually did it, what kind of 3-year-old genius brain
could have sorted that out from all the other stimuli, for
example the first time I had ever had fried chicken, and
two pieces of it at that.

Then a miscalculation. Perhaps celery juice would have been
a more apt addition to that recipe?

I'm invited to celebrate Shavuot tonight - this is a feast
to celebrate the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people
and to honor the (invention? discovery? gift?) of Kashrut.

It's the one dairy-based celebration of the Jewish year,
and I've been told to bring my pills:

Classic Cheese Blintzes
Cat: dairy, Shavuot
servings: 12

BATTER
4 eggs
1/2 c milk
1/2 c water
1 c flour
1/4 c sugar
1 pk vanilla sugar
1 pn salt
1 Tb oil
CHEESE FILLING I
1/2 lb farmer cheese
4 oz cream cheese
4 Tb honey or maple syrup
1/2 lemon, juice only
1 egg yolk
CHEESE FILLING II (alternate)
1 lb cottage cheese, strained
2 egg yolks
2 Tb flour
2 Tb sugar
1 ts vanilla sugar
1/4 c raisins (optional)

Blintzes are a traditional dish for the holiday of Shavuot.
Top with sour cream, apple sauce or cinnamon and sugar.

BATTER: In a large mixer bowl combine eggs, milk, water and
blend well. Gradually add flour, then both sugars, salt and
oil. Beat well until there are no lumps in the batter.

FILLING I: Combine all ingredients in a bowl and beat well.
Or combine all the ingredients in a blender container and
blend until smooth.

FILLING II: Combine all ingredients, except raisins, in a
bowl and beat well. Or all the ingredients can be combined
in a blender container and blended until smooth. Then add
raisins.

TO MAKE CREPES: 1. Prepare batter and filling of your
choice. Using a paper towel or basting brush, apply a thin
coating of oil to a 7" skillet. Place skillet over medium
heat until skillet is hot but not smoking.

Ladle 1/3 c batter into the skillet. Tilt pan to swirl the
batter so it covers the bottom of the skillet.

Fry on one side until small air bubbles form, and top is
set. Bottom should be golden brown. When done, carefully
loosen edges of crepe and slip out of skillet onto a plate.

Repeat the above procedure until all the batter is used.
Grease the skillet as needed.

Turn each crepe so that golden brown side is up. Place 3 Tb
filling on one edge in a 2 1/2" long by 1" wide mound.

Roll once to cover filling. Fold the sides into the center
and continue rolling until completely closed.

Heat 2 Tb oil in the skillet and place each crepe seam side
down in the skillet and fry 2 min on each side, turning once.

VARIATION: Whole wheat pastry flour can be used instead of
white flour.

Edited to add: and a very heavy dairy meal indeed.

Started off with a simple appetizer of dry Monterey Jack with
olives and peppers. The main courses were cheese souffle -
not your standard thing, but even worse, with farmer's cheese,
and noodles with cheese and tomatoes and peppers (I believe
an old family recipe possibly from Joel's aunt). Both of these
were fine, but I didn't investigate the recipe situation for
obvious reasons: though I didn't overeat of the food but did
overeat of the pills, I still got a bit of stomach churn and
next-day explosion. The sides were asparagus roasted with
Parmesan and a salad. I've never been so thankful for salad.
Desserts: some famous cheesecake from New York, 5 kinds of
ice cream, and raspberry sorbet with fresh raspberries. Guess
which one I had. Okay, I did try the cheesecake and found it
kind of ordinary, not worth the pills.

For drinks, we had Lagavulin, which I can still taste 12 hours
later. Also a tolerable Golan Cabernet, the way-too-sweet
Baron Herzog Chardonnay (Central Coast), and a single-vineyard
Chardonnay from the Galilee area that would have been okay
(my fumblefingers first typed "oaky," which it also was) but
that it was kind of corked, which I didn't bring up, as one of
the guests had brought it.
